HONOLULU – On the back of an outstanding pitching performance by starter
Isaiah Magdaleno, the Hawai'i baseball team soared past Ball State taking game one in a 6-1 victory Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
Magdaleno struck out a career-high 12 batters and gave up just two hits during a lights-out 8.1 innings. After giving up a hit to start off the ballgame, Magdaleno caged the Cardinals, striking out seven of the next eight batters he faced and later retiring 17 straight.
Hawai'i got on the board in the third after
Kamana Nahaku reached base on an error in right field and later advanced home on an RBI groundout from
Ben Zeigler-Namoa.
The 'Bows would tack on three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-0 lead.
Christian Hoffman ripped a two-out, two-RBI double, bringing in
Elijah Ickes and Nahaku in the fifth. To start the sixth inning,
Draven Nushida roped a double off the wall and scored on a
Kody Watanabe single through the four hole.
Zeigler-Namoa's first home run of the season made it 5-0 in the seventh and a
Jake Redding sacrifice fly in the eighth capped the scoring as Hawai'i secured the series-opening win.
Magdaleno's 12 strikeouts are the most by a UH pitcher since 2022 when Blaze Koalii Pontes struck out 12 against UC Davis. His 8.1 innings pitched is also the longest outing by a Rainbow Warrior pitcher since
Randy Abshier threw a complete game on Apr. 22, 2023.
The Rainbow Warrior offense stayed balanced throughout the night with eight hits. Nahaku reached base three times and scored twice, while Nushida added a pair of hits and scored in the sixth. Hoffman's two-RBI double and an RBI single from Watanabe provided key insurance, and
Tsubasa Tomii closed the door with two strikeouts to finish it off. At the plate, Zeigler-Namoa continued to rake, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a solo shot over the right-center fence.
Hawai'i will be back at Les Murakami tomorrow for game two of the series vs. Ball State starting at 6:35 p.m.
Hekili Robello is set to take the mound for the 'Bows as he looks for his third win in as many starts.
