Women's Tennis Downs Sacramento State for First Win of 2026

HONOULU–The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team notched their first win of the 2026 season defeating Sacramento State, 4-3 on Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. With the win, the Rainbow Wahine evened their record to 1-1 while the Hornets fell to 1-1.

In doubles, Sacramento State got off to a strong start with their No. 3 duo of Palina Saulevich and Catherine Walker downing UH's Emma Forgac and Allaire Berl, 6-2. But the 'Bows battled back to even things at 1-1 with Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo holding off Sac State's Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte on the No. 2 court, winning by a break, 6-4. UH's No. 1 pair of Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor edged out the Hornet's Camila Maldonaldo Gutierrez and Irene Riva to win the doubles point with a score of 6-4 as the 'Bows took the early 1-0 lead in the match.

Hawai'i's No. 1 in singles player, rookie Gull,. earned her first regular season collegiate win by sweeping Sac State's Walker in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. On the No. 3 court, UH's Forgac defeated Pranyte, winning a first set tie-breaker before coasting in the second frame for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory.

Sacramento State's Maldonado Gutierrez won on the No. 5 court over UH's Berl, 6-0, 7-5 to to trail UH in the match, 3-1.

Hawai'i's Galindo then clinched the match, 4-1, winning on the No. 6 court. Galindo edged out Saulevich in a hard fougt first set that ended in a tie-breaker before recording the match-winning sweep, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. For Gaindo, it marked her second-straight singles win in 2026.

With the match already decided, the Hornets rallied to post a pair of three-set wins on the No. 2 and No. 4 courts.

Hawai'i and Sacramento State both have a quick turnaround as they face each other again on Friday, Jan. 23 at 4:00 p.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex.
