Softball Splits Doubleheader at CSUN

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (16-11, 2-3 Big West) split its doubleheader at CSUN of Saturday at the Matador Diamond. The Rainbow Wahine dropping the opener, 4-1, but bounced back to hold off the Matadors in the second game, 4-3.  
 
CSUN 4, Hawai'i 1
UH starter Addison Kostrencich took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings. Millie Fidge tossed the final frame, allowing a run on a hit with a walk.
 
CSUN's Lauryn Carranco earned the complete game win, shutting out UH scattering four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

UH's Izabella Martinez led off the fourth with UH's first hit of the game. She slid safely into second on the play off a fielding error on the centerfielder. Later, UH threatened with two runners on and two outs, but CSUN escaped damage as a strikeout snuffed out the UH rally.
 
The Matadors' broke the scoreless game posting a run in the fourth. Tiara Westbrook led off the frame with a double off the centerfield wall. Later, in the frame, a sacrifice fly hit by Kylie Galindo drove in pinch runner Jizzell Ruiz for the 1-0 lead.
 
CSUN rallied to load the bases with one out in the fifth. Former Rainbow Wahine player Jadyn Nielsen  hit a single up the middle to score two runs to extend their lead to 3-0.
 
With runners at the corners and one out, the Matadors executed a double steal to add a run to lead 4-0.
 
With one out in the seventh, Hawai'I's Carys Murakami reached safely on a single up the middle. Cierra Yamamoto then drew a walk. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Chloe Borges then lined a sacrifice fly to right to drive home Murakami from third. But the Matadors were able to get a strikeout to end the game.
 
 
Hawai'i 4, CSUN 3
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out on the board, Hawai'i strung together five-straight hits for a red-hot start. Murakami, Milan Ah Yat and Jamie McGaughey all reached on singles to load the bases. Kolbi Kochi followed by drilling a double to the leftfield corner to score both Murakami and Ah Yat. Liliana Thomas then drove a double to right to drive home McGaughey and Kochi for a 4-0 lead. On the play Thomas was thrown out at third trying to stretch her hit to a triple. The four runs would be all Macy Brandl and the UH team would need in the end for the win.
 
In the second, the Matadors cut their deficit in half on a Mikayla Carman two-RBI double that scored both Gizella Vargas Sandoval and Raegan Jackson.
 
CSUN tacked on another run in the fifth on a two out RBI single by Alexa Landeros that scored Jizell Ruiz that trimmed UH's lead to4-3.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Kylie Galindo reached on a one out single to left. Vargas Sandoval followed by ripping a double to the right-center gap. On the play, pinch runner Rhea Furtado rounded third to try to score, but a perfect Gibbs-to-Murakami-to-Izabella Martinez relay gunned Furtado out at the plate to prevent the tying run from scoring. UH got the final out a batter later on a groundout to second.
 

UH starter Macy Brandl earned the complete game win to improve to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big West. She allowed three runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
 
CSUN's Isabella Alonso suffered the complete game loss, giving up four runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
 
The Rainbow Wahine return home to play a three game series vs. UC Davis. The 'Bows and Aggies will start the series with a Saturday doubleheader on March 22 beginning at 2:00 p.m. HT. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday, March 23 starting at 2:00 p.m. HT. All games will be played at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
