Women's Basketball Faces Liberty, Montana State in Maui Classic

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team wraps up its nonconference schedule with a pre-holiday trip to the Valley Isle for the two-day Maui Classic at Seabury Hall in Makawao.
 
The Rainbow Wahine take on Liberty on Friday at 7:30 p.m. to cap the opening day of the tournament hosted by Oregon State. They then face Montana State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. to close out the weekend.
 
The 'Bows head to Maui at 5-5 after evening their record with a 61-47 win over Hawai'i Hilo on Dec. 11.

'BOWS NOTES
  • UH is making its first appearance in the Maui Classic. The 'Bows visited the Valley Isle last year for an exhibition game against Chaminade at the Kamehameha-Maui campus in Pukalani.
  • Freshman guard Bailey Flavell continues to lead the 'Bows with 14.0 points per game. She's scored in double figures in seven games and scored nine in the other three. She also leads the team with 13 3-pointers.
  • Senior forward Imani Perez leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game and ranks second in the Big West with 15 blocked shots (1.7 per game).  
  • As a team, UH leads the Big West and ranks 20th nationally with 5.5 blocks per game. UH blocked 14 shots at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 6 to tie the program's single-game record set in 2005
  • Junior Jovi Lefotu eased back into the rotation in her recovery from a knee injury and made her first start of the season against Hawai'i Hilo on Dec. 11. She contributed eight points and four rebounds to the win.
  • Sophomore Ritorya Tamilo also made her first start of the season against UH Hilo after coming off the bench in her previous seven games. She leads the team with a .525 shooting percentage.
  • With Flavell leading the way, UH's eight newcomers account for 62.1% of the team's point total this season. The 'Bows' six true freshmen have contributed 48.5% of their scoring.
  • Montana State and Liberty are ranked in the collegeinsider.com Women's Mid Major Top 25.
  • Following the Maui Classic, the 'Bows resume Big West play by ringing in 2026 with games against UC Riverside on Jan. 1 and UC San Diego on Jan. 3.

  • Friday's game will mark the first women's basketball meeting between the Rainbow Wahine and Flames.
  • Liberty head coach Alexis Sherard is in his first season leading the Flames. Sherard previously served as associate head coach and assistant coach over the previous 18 years.
  • The Flames enter the week at 6-3 and coming off a 76-61 loss to Richmond on Dec. 13.
  • Liberty went 26-7 last season and claimed the Conference USA title. The Flames were voted second in this season's CUSA preseason coaches poll.
  • Like UH, Liberty features an international roster with student-athletes representing seven countries (Canada, DR Congo, Iceland, Netherlands, Spain and Turkey as well as the United States).
  • Sophomore guard Avery Mills leads the Flames with 16.2 points per game and 29 3-pointers.

  • The Rainbow Wahine and Bobcats meet for the third time overall and the first time since Dec. 4, 2017.
  • Montana State head coach Tricia Binford is in her 21st season leading the Bobcats. She has a career record of 365-256.
  • Binford led the Bobcats to a 30-4 season in 2024-25, including a 17-1 record in the Big Sky Conference. MSU was voted first in the Big Sky preseason poll.
  • UH and MSU have one common opponent this season and both have a win over Portland (MSU, 86-72; UH, 66-61).
  • The Bobcats enter the week at 6-3 and are coming off a 69-44 loss at Oregon on Sunday.
  • Sophomore guard Taylee Chirrick leads Montana State with 17.8 points per game followed by sophomore forward Addison Harris at 16.4 ppg.
  • The Bobcats lead NCAA Division I with 16.8 steals per game and rank fifth with 26.89 turnovers forced per game.
