HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team swept its doubleheader to open the Hawai'i Fall Invitational on Thursday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine starting pitchers--
Macy Brandl and Taryn Irimata--fired a pair of shutouts over Fullerton College and Chaminade to start the three-day tournament.
Hawai'i 1, Fullerton College 0
In their first game, UH edged out Fullerton 1-0. Junior pitcher
Macy Brandl fired a two-hit, complete game shutout with seven strikeouts and one walk.
On offense UH scored its only run in the fifth inning.
Ellyanna Cinzori and Bailey Nagasako both drew walks to start the frame.
Maycen Gibbs then executed a sacrifice bunt that pushed both runners into scoring position and Kayara Tuiloma came through hitting an opposite-field groundout to second to drive in what proved to be the winning run for the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawai'i 3, Chaminade 0
UH sophomore transfer pitcher Irimata was dominant in her start against the Silverswords. She did not allow a hit through the first four-and-a-third innings and gave up just the one hit in five innings of work with eight strikeouts and two walks. Maryn Macneil threw the final two innings allowing two hits, with a strikeout and a walk.
The Rainbow Wahine struck first, scoring one run in the top of the first. Sophomore transfer, leftfielder Rhea Furtado reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an RBI single to right by senior second baseman
Carys Murakami.
In the fifth, UH added a run to lead, 2-0. Junior second baseman Neveah Telles reached first on a one-out walk. She moved to second on a groundout to short by junior catcher
Keely Kai. Senior rightfielder
Larissa Goshi raced down the first baseline to beat out the throw for an infield hit. On the play the throw bounced past the first baseman allowing Telles to score.
The Rainbow Wahine extended its lead to 3-0 in the seventh. Freshman centerfielder Abby Sasaki drilled a double to the left-center gap and later scored on an RBI single by Kai.
In the first game of the day, Fullerton College had a walk-off, 4-3 win over Chaminade to start the tournament.
The Hawai'i Fall Invitational continues on Friday with three games slated. Hawai'i Pacific will take on Fullerton College at 1:00 p.m. HT. Hawai'i will play a doubleheader, facing Fullerton at 3:30 p.m. HT followed by HPU at 6:00 p.m. HT at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
