Women’s Basketball Falls To Santa Clara In Finale Of American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team closed the American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown with a 76-57 loss to Santa Clara on Sunday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 4-3 on the young season with their third straight loss.

The 'Bows suffered their largest margin of defeat this year following a barrage of three-pointers and turnovers. The Broncos (7-3) hit 11 three-pointers on the day, while UH committed 24 turnovers to just six for Santa Clara. The Broncos capitalized by out-scoring UH 28-2 on points off of turnovers.

UH actually shot better from the floor than Santa Clara – 38 percent to 36 percent – but the Broncos put up 22 more shots than the 'Bows after capitalizing on its vast turnover margin as well as an advantage on the offensive boards (13-9).

Sophie Glancey (19 points), Kylee Fox (18) and Maia Jones (15) spearheaded the Bronco attack, combining for 52 of the team's 76 points and seven of their 11 three-pointers.   Bailey Flavell was the only 'Bow in double-digits, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. The freshman guard was named to the all-tournament team.

The Broncos hit two 3-pointers in a 10-0 run in the first quarter and led 20-8 when Fox hit Santa Clara's fourth triple of the opening period.

UH scored the first five points of the second quarter with Izzy Forsyth draining the first 3-pointer of her UH career. Santa Clara maintained its lead and went on a 6-0 run to stretch the margin to 31-17 and eventually took a 35-25 lead into the locker room.

Flavell sparked a 6-0 UH run in the third quarter and the 'Bows closed to within four at 37-33 when she drove for a layup. But Santa Clara again extended the lead from long range with three more 3-pointers and took a 56-43 lead into the fourth.

Santa Clara left no doubt in the final quarter, going on a 15-2 run to extend its margin to as many as 26 points midway through the period.  The Broncos finished with 13 steals on the day and out-scored the 'Bows, 25-6, on fast break points.

In Sunday's first game, Lindenwood edged Vermont 58-54 to hand the Catamounts their first loss of the tournament. Despite the loss, Vermont won a three-team tie breaker (least points allowed) over Lindenwood and Santa Clara to claim the tournament crown.

The Rainbow Wahine next embark on their first road trip of the season to open their final season in the Big West. UH will play at UC Davis on Thursday, Dec. 4 and at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Dec. 6 as part of the Big West's Bold Week. The 'Bows enter the conference season as the two-time defending regular-season champions.
