Women's Basketball Drops Big West Opener at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team saw a 14-point lead evaporate in the fourth quarter of a 68-63 loss to UC Davis on Thursday in the Big West opener for both teams at University Credit Union Center in Davis, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-4) drained a season-high 10 3-pointers and built 61-47 lead in the final period. But the 'Bows went without a field goal over the final six minutes and the host Aggies closed the game on an 18-0 run to win the "Bold Week" matchup while UH dropped its fourth straight.

UH freshman Bailey Flavell hit four 3-pointers in a season-high 22 point performance to lead the 'Bows. Senior Saniyah Neverson tied her career high with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, including two 3-pointers.

But UH couldn't overcome 25 turnovers leading to a 27-11 UC Davis advantage in points off of turnovers. The 'Bows committed seven turnovers in the fourth quarter which the Aggies converted into 11 points.

Megan Norris led UC Davis (7-2) with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Ryann Bennett finished with 16 points and Nya Epps hit back-to-back 3-pointers that pushed the Aggies ahead in their decisive run.

The Rainbow Wahine shot 50% from the field and hit five 3-pointers in the first half to take a 33-31 lead into the locker room.

The game began with an administrative technical foul assessed against UC Davis and Imani Perez's free throw gave UH a 1-0 lead before the opening tip. Both teams got out to a hot start from the field and UC Davis opened up a six-point lead in the first quarter. Jovi Lefotu made her season debut and drained a 3-pointer on her first shot of her junior year and UH trailed 20-15 after the first 10 minutes.

UH surged ahead in the second quarter with a 7-0 run and took the lead when Keiara Curtis scored while drawing a foul and converted the three-point play. Neverson hit UH's fifth 3-pointer of the half to give the 'Bows a 33-28 lead before going into halftime with a two-point cushion.

UH opened up a 10-point lead at 46-36 on Rebecca Moors' first 3-pointer of the season at the 4:33 mark of the third quarter. The 'Bows cooled off over the rest of the period and UC Davis answered with a 6-0 run with all of the Aggies' points coming from the free-throw line.

Flavell scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter and UH led 54-42 when she hit her fourth 3-pointer of the night. She later fed Neverson for a layup for UH's final field goal. After Flavell made two free throws with 4:41 left and UH up 63-50, the Aggies held the 'Bows scoreless the rest of the way. UC Davis took the lead on Epps' 3-pointer with 1:11 left and the Aggies held on from there.

The Rainbow Wahine head to Southern California for the next stop on their first road trip of the season and face Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. Tipoff at Titan Gym is set for 1 p.m. Pacific Time (11 a.m. Hawai'i Time).
