GAME STORYLINES
- The teams are playing for the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy, which was created in memory of the legendary head coach of both programs who passed away in May 2019. San José State has held possession of the trophy since 2020.
- Tomey coached UH for 10 seasons from 1977-86, compiling a 63-46-3 record, and coached SJSU for five seasons which included a nine-win campaign in 2006.
- SJSU leads the all-time series 23-22-1 and have won the last four meetings, including a 35-0 victory in the teams' last match-up in 2023 in Honolulu.
- UH's last win over the Spartans was a 42-40 victory in 2019 in Honolulu.
- UH has a slight 9-7-1 edge in games played in San José. The road team has won eight of the last 11 meetings and 11 of the last 16.
- This week's match-up pits two Polynesian head coaches – UH's Timmy Chang and SJSU's Ken Niumatalolo, a former UH quarterback and assistant coach. Niumatalolo was the second Polynesian head coach of a major college program (UH's Larry Price was the first in 1974) while Chang became the fourth when he took over at UH in 2022.
- UH is 2-1 against Niumatalolo-coached teams, with both wins against Navy in 2009 and '18.
- Niumatalolo's coaching staff includes former Warriors OC/QB coach Craig Stutzmann (1998-2001), WR coach Billy Ray Stutzmann (2010--13), OL coach John Estes (2006-09), and offensive analyst Kolney Cassel (2018).
- UH (6-2, 3-1 MW) extended its win streak to three after a 31-19 victory over Colorado State two weeks ago in Fort Collins, Colo. The Rainbow Warriors, who became bowl eligible with the victory, are off to its best start through eight games since the 2018.
- SJSU (2-5, 1-2) dropped its second straight after a 30-25 defeat at Utah State in Logan, Utah. Four of the Spartans' five losses this season have been decided by one score.
- QB Micah Alejado has thrown for 300+ yards and 3+ touchdowns in UH's last three games. He has directed an offense that has averaged 39.7 points, 390.3 passing yards, and 505.3 yards of total offense during that three-game stretch.
- PK Kansei Matsuzawa needs one field goal to tie the program's single-season record of 21 set by Richard Spelman in 1984.
