SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—Four members of the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team competed on the opening day of The Big West Fall Invite at the Arnhold Tennis Center. The men opened with just singles matches on Thursday. UH's 65^th-ranked Azuma Visaya, had a bye in the Round of 32, won his Round of 16 singles match to advance to the quarterfinals.
 
Hawai'i newcomer Kosuke Nakanishi won his first set and bounced back after dropping the second set by a break. Nakanishi pulled away in the third to defeat UC Davis' Nadaul Cheam, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
 
UH's Timothy Li and Kent Mueller both won their first sets, but were unable to hold off their opponents down the stretch, falling in three sets each. Li fell to UC Irvine's Sohrob Amiravari, 5-7. 6-4, 6-1, while Muller dropped his match against UC Santa Barbara's Karel Fromel, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
 
After enjoying a bye in the Roound of 32, Hawai'i's Visaya started his day in the Round of 16 by dispatching UC Irvine's Rui Ning Huang in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, Visaya will face Cal Poly's Raz Haviv in the Quarterfinal round. UH's Nakanishi won his first set but couldn't keep pace and fell in three to UC Irvine's Max Fardanesh, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
 
In doubles, Hawai'i duo of Nakanishi and Mueller will take on Kaveh Taheri/Lucas Bollinger of UC Davis to start the doubles competition on Friday in the Round of 16. UH's Li and Visaya have a first round bye and will face the winner of the Round of 16 match between Perry Di Giulio/Rithvik Katpelly (UC Davis) and Jovan Padroza/Owen Pearson (UC Riverside). Li and Visaya's match will start at 7:00 a.m. HT
