Soccer Drops Match to Portland, 1-0

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Playing its second match in as many days, the Hawai'i women's soccer team fell to Portland, 1-0, in its finale in the OUTRIGGER Invitational at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Taking the pitch on back-to-back days for the first time since 2018, the Rainbow Wahine fell into an early hole as the Pilots struck off of a UH turnover in the third minute to make it 1-0. The Pilots' Hailey Bagby scored on a ball that got past the Hawai'i back line to give UP all the offense it would need.

The 'Bows dominated possession for the final 30 minutes of the first half, out-shooting the Pilots 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to equalize. UH had its best opportunity to tie things up just before half when Portland was called for a hand-ball in the box in the 44th minute, but Jacey Jicha's penalty kick sailed just high.

The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the second half, but UH couldn't knot things up while Hawai'i keeper Kennedy Justin recorded a pair of second-half saves to keep the Pilots off the board in the final 45 minutes.

Jordyn Eldredge Sagapolutele finished with two shots, both on goal, while Nalani Damacion and Cate Sheahan each also put shots on frame. Freshman Laule'a Ah Mook Sang got her first career start and sophomore Izzy Ayala made her first start of the year after missing the first two matches of the year and coming off the bench Wednesday.

The Rainbow Wahine have a week off before returning to action Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. against Air Force to kick off the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi.
