UH Swimming Alums Set for Olympics

Three past University of Hawai'i swimming standouts will represent the Rainbow Warrior and Rainbow Wahine programs at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Kane Follows (2016-20) and Laticia Transom (2022-23) qualified for New Zealand's national team and Micah Masei (2017-21) is slated to compete in his second Olympics for American Samoa.

UH will be represented in the Olympic swimming competition for the 15th time overall and for the eighth straight Summer Games, a run that began with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Follows is among four men on New Zealand's roster for the Paris Games and is entered in the 200-meter backstroke and 100-meter backstroke. He broke a 12-year-old national record in the event with a time of 1:57.13 at the Apollo Projects New Zealand Swimming Championships held in April in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Follows' UH career was highlighted by All-America honors in the 200-yard backstroke in 2019 and '20 and he remains the program's record holder in the event at 1:39.15.

A year after a record-breaking season at UH, Transom earned a spot with New Zealand's Olympic contingent as part of the women's 4x200 freestyle relay team. She claimed the 100-meter freestyle title at the New Zealand championships with a time of 53.94 and earned silver in the 200-meter free to secure her spot on the Olympic team. Transom holds the UH records in the 50-yard freestyle (22.18), 100-yard free (47.39) and 100-yard backstroke (51.88). She was also an All-American in the 100 free.

Masei competed in the 100-meter breaststroke in the 2020 Tokyo Games for American Samoa and earned a trip to Paris for his second Olympics. He placed second in the 100-meter breast at the 13th Oceania Championships held in April in Australia with a personal-best of 1:04.64. He also won gold in the 50-meter breast in the meet.

Masei is slated to become the sixth UH swimmer, and second from the men's program, to compete in two Olympic Games. Azad Al-Barazi was the Rainbow Warriors' previous two-time Olympian, having competed for Syria in the 2012 London and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. Former Rainbow Wahine standouts Susie Atwood (United States; 1968, 1972), Yan Chen (China; 1996, 2000), Melanie Schlanger (Australia; 2008, 2012) and Jasmine Alkhaldi (Philippines; 2012, 2016) also competed in two Olympic Games.
