2024 Softball Season Review

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Rainbow Wahine placed fourth in the Big West with a 14-13 Big West record and finished the season with a 20-26 overall mark.

 

  • UH led the Big West with 34 home runs. As a team, Hawai‘i averaged .78 home runs per game to lead the Big West in home runs per game for the third-straight season and fifth time in last six seasons.

 

  • For the third-straight season, the 'Bows led the Big West in turning double plays, averaging 0.43 double plays per game which ranked UH No. 33 in the NCAA for 2024. 

 

  • Mya’Liah Bethea led the Big West with 12 home runs for a second consecutive year. Chloe Borges and Maya Nakamura ranked within the top-five of the conference, each blasting at least seven home runs.

 

  • UH concluded the season with a 15-12 home record, its third-straight season with a winning record at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

 

  • UH pitched three shut-out games with home wins over Kansas City (5-0), Cleveland State (13-0) and a road victory over  Long Beach State (8-0).

 

  • Head coach Bob Coolen earned his 1,100th win at Hawai‘i in a 10-inning, 2-1 walk-off win over league winner Cal State Fullerton. 

 

  • Six Rainbow Wahine earned six All-Big West honors - Maya Nakamura (second team), Izabella Martinez (second team) Mya'liah Bethea (HM), Chloe Borges (HM),Haley Johnson and Dallas Millwood (HM).

 

  • Nakamura (March 11), Borges (March 25) and Bethea (April 22) also received Big West Field Player of the Week Awards throughout the season.

First UH team to qualify for the Women's College World Series … finished the season with a 50-16 record … upset top-seeded Alabama in the Super Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on a walk-off home run by Jenna Rodriguez … hit 158 home runs to set the NCAA single-season record … two NFCA All-Americans — Melissa Gonzalez (3B, First Team) and Kelly Majam (CF, Second Team) … swept all major WAC awards — Jessica Iwata (Player of the Year), Stephanie Ricketts (Pitcher of the Year), Kelly Majam (Freshman of the Year), and Bob Coolen (Coach of the Year) … captured the WAC regular season title with a 19-1 conference record and won the WAC tournament … set several other school single-season records including hits (578), runs scored (488), home runs, and RBI (449) … captains were Katie Grimes, Amanda "AJ" Tauali'i, Kanani Pu'u-Warren and Traci Yoshikawa.
