Baseball Wins in Extras Again to Clinch Series

DAVIS, Calif. – For the second straight day the Hawai'i baseball team came up with some clutch moments down the stretch to clinch the series win at UC Davis with a 4-3 win in 10 innings Sunday.

After failing to capitalize on bases loaded opportunities in the eighth and ninth, the Rainbow Warriors finally broke through to score the go-ahead run in the 10th. Kyson Donahue led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Ben Zeigler-Namoa base hit to put UH in business. Elijah Ickes sacrificed both runners over before Dallas Duarte delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to put Hawai'i in front 4-3.

Alex Giroux, who came back after starting Friday's game, earned the win after shutting out the Aggies over the final three innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Tyler Dyball delivered two shutout innings of relief retiring all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings to keep the game tied at three.

Each team scored a run in the second inning to make it a 1-1 game before UH took the lead with a run in the fourth. Matthew Miura led off the fourth with a single, moved to third on a Austin Machado base hit, then scored on a double play to give Hawai'i the lead.

Jordan Donahue doubled in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI double to scored Dallas Duarte from first to put the 'Bows up 3-1. The Aggies would come right back though, hitting solo homers in the fifth and sixth innings to tie it up at three.

The win clinched UH's sixth straight series victory over the Aggies, extending a streak that dates back to 2018, while marking the first time since May 22-23, 2010 that the Rainbow Warriors won back-to-back games in extra innings.

Jordan Donahue stretched his hitting streak to 12 games after finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI and a double while Machado went 3-for-3 with two doubles to reach base for the 28th straight game to start his season. Stone Miyao turned in a multi-hit game off the bench, going 2-for-3 with a walk as UH worked eight walks as a team.

The Rainbow Warriors will remain on the mainland and play a nonconference game at Santa Clara Tuesday at 3:05 p.m. HT before opening a series at UC Santa Barbara Friday.
