SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Behind yet another strong combined effort on the mound and a balanced offensive attack, the Hawai'i baseball team won its third straight with a 9-3 victory at Santa Clara in nonconference action Tuesday.
The Rainbow Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and fourth. The 'Bows pushed across one run on a
Sean Rimmer bases-loaded walk in the second but UH left the bases loaded.
Jordan Donahue doubled the lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth but Hawai'i again left multiple runners on and led by two after the top of the fourth.
After the Broncos cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the 'Bows put up a crooked number with three in the sixth to make it 5-1. Donahue again came through, doubling to right field to plate a pair of runs and make it 4-1. Later in the frame, Donahue hustled home to score on a pop up to shortstop to cap off a three-run frame.
The Broncos pulled back within three with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but
Ben Zeigler-Namoa got it right back with a run-scoring single in the seventh to put UH back up by four.
Santa Clara again would answer back with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the 'Bows plated three more in the eighth to break it open.
Matthew Miura singled home Donahue to make it 7-3 before
Austin Machado followed one batter later with a two-run knock to stretch the lead to 9-3.
Six Hawai'i pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts to just one walk while holding the Broncos to three runs on seven hits.
Cory Ronan earned his first win of the season, starting and going 1.2 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts in the designated staff game. Freshman
Sebastian Gonzalez entered with UH up 6-3 with one out in the seventh inning and worked the final 2.2 innings with four strikeouts to record his first career save.
Donahue extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his two-run double – the sixth straight game that he has recorded a two-bagger. Machado has now reached base in all 29 games he has played in after going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
Kyson Donahue and
Jake Tsukada each went 3-for-5 while Miura turned in his team-best ninth multi-RBI game of the year, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
