LEADING OFF
DID YOU KNOW?
The Rainbow Warriors won on a walk-off twice over the weekend vs. Cal Poly, marking the first time since 2014 that UH has had two walk-off wins in a series. On the season, the 'Bows have three walk-off victories - the most by a UH team in a season since 2011.
WALK OFF WARRIORS
Hawai'i is coming off of a series win over Cal Poly in which it won two games on walk-offs. The Rainbow Warriors opened the series Friday with a 4-3 win behind
Austin Machado's walk-off sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and clinched the series following a
Naighel Ali'i Calderon walk-off double in the 11th inning of a 6-5 Sunday victory. Calderon also scored the winning run on Friday after leading off the ninth inning with a base hit. This weekend marked the first time since 2014 against UAB that UH has had two walk-off wins in the same series while giving the 'Bows three walk-off victories this year, the most in a season since 2011, when they had five.
LATE INNING MAGIC
The Hawai'i bats have delivered in a number of big moments late in games this season. The Rainbow Warriors have taken the lead in the eighth inning or later in seven of their victories this year, with five of those coming in the ninth inning or extra innings. UH has won five games in which it was tied or trailing after eight innings while winning six times when tied or trailing through seven frames. The 'Bows have scored 63 runs in the eighth inning or later on the year, with 47 of those coming in the eighth inning. Seven different players have delivered the eventual game-winning RBI in the seven games in which UH has taken the lead in the eighth inning or later.
TROPICAL SWARM
The Hawai'i pitching staff has shown off its depth so far in 2024, using a deep pool of arms to rank among the nation's leaders in a number of categories. The Rainbow Warriors currently sit in the top 30 nationally in walks per nine innings (11th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (15th), shutouts (26th) and WHIP (26th). UH also ranks in the top three of the Big West in all of those categories. The 'Bows have also shown that they can turn to a number of different arms to get outs, as 10 pitchers have appeared in at least 10 games and 11 different pitchers have earned a win.
