'Bows Extend Leads at MPSF Swimming Championship

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The University of Hawai'i swimming teams racked up four victories among 13 podium finishes on Friday to extend their leads in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in St. George, Utah.

The Rainbow Warriors ended the third day of competition at the Utah Tech Human Performance Center with 597 points, 149 ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara.

The defending MPSF champion Rainbow Wahine entered Friday's events with a 41-point lead over UC Davis. By the end of the evening, they had accumulated 591 points to UC Davis' 448 heading into the meet's final day.

UH's Mario Surkovic claimed gold in the men's 200-yard freestyle and Justin Lisoway captured the 100 breaststroke title. The Rainbow Warriors ended the day with a dominant performance in the 400 medley relay with the team of Timothy Gallagher, Lisoway, Grant Stoddard and Surkovic posting an MPSF Championship record time of 3:07.53.

The Rainbow Wahine swept the top three places in the women's 100 backstroke with Anna Friedrich capturing the conference crown followed by Alexa Ozment and Dorottya Dobos.  The 'Bows also claimed two more individual silvers and another in the women's 400 medley relay.

The UH men opened the evening session with two podium finishes in the 100 butterfly. Stoddard earned silver with a career-best time of 46.47 seconds followed by Karol Ostrowski in third at 46.49. Their times rank third and fourth in the event in program history.

The Rainbow Wahine added to their point total in the women's 200 freestyle with Cass Treydte placing second (1:47.32) and Mira Selling third (1:47.85).

Surkovic then charged to the win in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:35.24, his career best and the second fastest mark in program history.

Kathryn Ivanov added a silver in the women's 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.29.

Lisoway earned the Rainbow Warriors' second win of the day with a time of 53.45 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.

Lisoway charged into the lead in the breaststroke leg and Stoddard's butterfly leg gave Surkovic a wide margin going into the freestyle. Surkovic finished off the Rainbow Warriors' fourth relay victory of the meet and UH broke the previous MPSF record of 3:08.42 set by BYU last year.
