Women's Basketball Faces TIgers, Aztecs in San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team closes out the nonconference schedule with two games in the San Diego Classic this weekend. The Rainbow Wahine begin their second road trip of the season by taking on Clemson on Friday and will face tournament host San Diego State on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time (1:30 p.m. Hawai'i time) at SDSU's Viejas Arena.
 
San Diego State is hosting the three-day, six-team event in conjunction with Coast 2 Coast Basketball. The UH-Clemson game will be streamed on BallerTV (subscription required). Saturday's UH-San Diego State matchup will air on the Mountain West Network.

  • At 6-3, the Ranbow Wahine are off to the program's best start since the 2005-06 season when UH started 10-2.
  • The 'Bows finished off a six-game homestand with a record-setting 56-15 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday. UH set program records for fewest points, fewest field goals and lowest field-goal percentage allowed against a Division I opponent.
  • Following Monday's win, UH jumped to eighth in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (32.8%) and 24th in scoring defense (54.3 points per game).
  • The 'Bows continue rank among the nation's leaders in blocked shots, placing fourth this week with 6.9 blocks per game. Freshman Ritorya Tamilo ranks second in the Big West and 24th nationally with 2.25 blocks per game.
  • Lily Wahinekapu moved into the team's scoring lead with 11.1 points per game. The senior is shooting 42.2% from the field and is tied for the team lead with 14 3-pointers.
  • Tamilo averages 10.6 points per game and is shooting a team-high 56.1% from the field and leads the 'Bows with 5.6 rebounds per game.
  • UH enters the San Diego Classic at 1-1 on the road this season. The 'Bows split their season-opening trip with a loss at Portland and a win at Portland State.

  • Hawai'i and San Diego State meet for the 29th time in Saturday's game. SDSU leads the series 15-13.
  • UH and San Diego State last met on Nov. 5, 2019. The 'Bows pulled out a 61-58 win in the season opener in Honolulu.
  • UH and SDSU met seven times as Western Athletic Conference members from 1997 to '99 with the 'Bows going 5-2 in those matchups.
  • UH is 5-9 on the road against the Aztecs.
  • The Aztecs are 55-25 over the last three seasons.
