The Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine swim teams return to actin after nearly a month off from competition. The 'Bows last competed at the SMU Invitational from Nov. 20-23. The 'Bows claimed multiple golds in both swim and dive events at the four-day event in Dallas, Texas that included nine teams.
Catherine Belyakov continued her outstanding campaign, claiming her third Big West Athlete of the Week honor of the season. The senior has earned the award every week the Rainbow Wahine have competed this season. Belyakov won the 200 individual medley with the second-fastest mark (1:57.82) in UH history. In the 400 individual medley prelims, she swam the fourth-fastest time (4:17.74), placing her in the top-10 in four events (100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley) in Rainbow Wahine history.
Karol Ostrowski led the way for the Rainbow Warriors, garnering the Big West Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Ostrowski set a school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:34.36, replacing teammate Mario Surkovic who held the previous record with a time of 1:34.49. The speedy senior now holds school records in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events. Ostrowski won the 50 freestyle with a mark of 18.99, setting a new pool record at SMU's Roberson and Lindley Aquatics Center.
The 'Bows tallied 10 top-10 times in UH history, five each from the Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior teams.
