Softball Sweeps Doubleheader to Open Fall Preseason Classic

HONOLULU—After heavy rains erased the first two games of the Fall Preseason Classic, the University of Hawai'i softball team swept its opening doubleheader on Friday night, pulling away from Fulleton College, 11-3 then holding off Chaminade, 2-1 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Hornets got on the board in the first frame, getting an RBI single to right by Hope Morales to drive in Veronica Moore for the early 1-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the first, Liliana Thomas drew a two-out walk and Jamie McGaughey followed by blasting a two-run home run over the leftfield fence to leapfrog ahead of the Hornets, 2-1.  
The Rainbow Wahine added two more runs in the third. McGaughey drove in her third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Milan Ah Yat who had led off the inning with a single. Chloe Borges followed with an RBI single to left that scored pinch runner Keely Kai to give UH a 4-1 lead.
                         
Hawai'i erupted for seven runs in the fifth, highlighted by a three run shot by Kiani-Taylor Soller and a two-run bomb by Alyssa Nakagawa that extended UH's lead to 11-1.
 
Hawai'i starter Macy Brandl earned the victory against her former team, tossing the first five innings. She allowed one run on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts. Relief pitcher Millie Fidge allowed one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in in inning-and-a-third. Emerson Coblentz got the final two outs allowing one run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout.
 
Fullerton College starter Grace Workman suffered the loss, giving up four runs in four innings pitched. She gave up five hits with two walks. Aiden Carlson allowed seven runs on four hits in two innings of work.

UH starter Addison Kostrencich earned the complete game win in her first appearance of the Fall. She allowed one run while spacing five hits. She fanned eight batters while walking none in the seven inning game.
 
The Silverswords struck first in the third. Rodriguez led off with a single to right that skipped by the rightfielder for a two base error. Later with one out, Taryn Fujioka then hit a single to right-center to drive in Rodriguez for the early 1-0 lead.
 
Hawai'i responded in the fourth on a two-run Liliana Thomas home run that sailed over the centerfield fence as UH took a 2-1 lead.
  Chaminade's Bailey Benson took the loss, allowing the two runs on two hits with a walk in four innings of work, while Kamryn Lopez tossed the final two innings giving up one hit.
 
The teams have Saturday off, but will resume the Fall Paradise Classic on Sunday, Nov. 10. The first game between Fullerton College and Chaminade will start at 12:00 p.m. HT. Hawai'i will play Fullerton at 2:30 p.m. followed by Chaminade at 4:30 p.m..
