HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i men's and women's swim & dive head coach
Steve Allnutt announced the hiring of two assistant coaches—Lauren Sale and Tim Gallagher. Both will begin their tenure at UH in the coming days.
Coach Sale (pronounced sah-lay) competed in club and high school in Colorado before matriculating and competing at Boise State, where she specialized in the 200 backstroke, 200 and 400 IM, and 100 fly. She also excelled in the classroom, earning All-Academic and All-Mountain West Scholar Athlete honors while serving as a captain of the Broncos' swim and dive team in the 2019-2020 season. Lauren competed in the 2019 Pacific Games representing Samoa, where she was a three-time gold medalist. Currently, she still holds a national record for Samoa.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, Lauren worked as a graduate assistant sports performance coach with the University of West Florida swim teams and later Northern Arizona. From July of 2022 to July of 2024 Sale worked as a sports performance coach and associate director of sports performance at her alma mater, Boise State.
Most recently, Sale has been a volunteer coach at the University of South Carolina where she was also a Lead Age Group Coach at Gamecock Aquatics. She started both roles in August 2024.
"I am very excited to announce Coach Lauren Sale as one of our newest member of the UH Swim & Dive 'Ohana!" says Allnutt. "Coach Lauren will bring a wide range of knowledge and experience to our program in and out of the water. She has coached swimming and strength & conditioning all over the US, and has great experience with competition during her collegiate and international swimming career. Lauren has a reputation for building strong relationship with all the student-athletes she works with, and her energy and passion for excellence will be a huge asset to our coaching staff and program!"
Gallagher is no stranger to the Duke Kahanumoku Aquatics Complex as he is a 2024 graduate of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. A member of the Rainbow Warriors swim team from 2019-24, he set three UH Top 10 times in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 IM in his senior season. Since June 2021, Gallagher has also served as an assistant coach at Aulea Swim Club in Kailua, O'ahu where he has coached athletes who have gone on to swim in NCAA institutions such as MIT and Hawai'i.
"It's with great honor that we will bring Tim Gallagher back to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex to continue his great career with UH Swim & Dive," exclaimed Allnutt. After five amazing years as a Rainbow Warrior student-athlete, he will step up to the coaching ranks and make a great impact on our current and future student-athletes. Tim has an incredible reputation within the local and national swimming community. We are
