Men's Volleyball Hosts Emmanuel In Two-Match Series This Week

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team returns to the court for a two-match, non-conference series with Emmanuel of Conference Carolinas, Wednesday, Jan. 10 and Friday, Jan. 12 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Match time is 7:00 p.m. both nights. The Rainbow Warriors (1-1) are coming off a season-opening series split of No. 10 Loyola Chicago while the Lions (0-0) will open their season this week.

Promotions & Giveaways:  Wednesday will feature great prizes being awarded throughout the match. Friday's contest will feature video tributes to Martin Luther King Jr in recognition of Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 15). Visit the sports marketing table (located at Gate A) to participate in the promotions and win great prizes. An autograph session with the Rainbow Warrior volleyball team will follow Friday's match (Gate B).

  • Hawai'i leads the all-time series 1-0.
  • The teams' only meeting was on the opening day of the 2020 Rainbow Warrior Classic in Honolulu. UH won 25-13, 25-15, 25-15. Hawai'i used 20 players and hit .470 with nine aces and 10.5 blocks.
  • The Lions finished 8-20 last season and were picked to finish eighth in the Conference Carolina preseason poll.
  • UH has a 10-0 all-time record against current Conference Carolinas teams. Among the eight teams in the league, Mount Olive is the only team Hawai'i has not played.
  • Among the 10 all-time matches, UH swept nine of them. Barton took a set off the Rainbow Warriors in a 2018 match-up at the Grow the Game Challenge in Nashville, Tenn.
  • UH is coming off a season-opening series split of Loyola Chicago. Hawai'i took the opener in straight sets and dropped the rematch in five sets. In the loss, the Warriors relinquished a 2-1 lead in the match and a five-point advantage (12-7) in the fifth set.
  • UH has not lost back-to-back matches at home since March 2 & 4, 2016 against BYU.
  • UH has a 96-9 (.914) record at SimpliFi Arena since the start of the 2017 season.
  • MB Guilherme Voss needs two block assists to move past Sivan Leoni (309) and into the program's Top 10 list for block assists. The senior is already tied for ninth in total blocks with Andre Breuer (344).
  • OH Spyros Chakas needs six aces to move into the Top 10 in career aces. Currently the senior has 93 aces. Naveh Milo is 10th with 99.
  • Freshman S Tread Rosenthal is the first true freshman to start the season at setter since Brian Beckwith in 2004. Beckwith started 18 matches that season. Joe Worsley was the last freshman to start during his freshman season, making 11 starts during the 2016 campaign.
