Women's Basketball Faces UC San Diego to Cap Homestand

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team closes a two-game Big West homestand against UC San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 20 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

UH opened the week with a 68-55 win over Long Beach State on Thursday. Lily Wahinekapu scored a season-high 19 points and Ashley Thoms poured in a career-best 18 points with four 3-pointers. The Rainbow Wahine are off to a 5-1 start in Big West play for the first time in head coach Laura Beeman's tenure. It's the program's best conference start since the 1999-2000 season, when the 'Bows ran out to a 9-1 start in the Western Athletic Conference.

TIPOFF

• Saturday's game will be the fifth meeting between Hawai'i and UC San Diego in a series that began in 2022. UCSD leads the series 3-1 overall and is 2-0 in games played in Honolulu.

• UH enters the game a half-game behind Big West leader UC Santa Barbara.

• UCSD was a UH nemesis for the last two seasons. The Tritons won the first three meetings in the series before the Rainbow Wahine broke through with a 61-58 win in La Jolla last season.

• UH guard Lily Wahinekapu has scored in double figures in each of the last five games to move into the team lead with 9.9 points per game. She is averaging a team-high 12.2 ppg in Big West games.

• Wahinekapu is 20 points away from reaching 1,000 for her collegiate career, including her time at Cal State Fullerton.

• Sophomore forward Imani Perez is averaging 9.1 points per game and leads the team and ranks third in the Big West with 19 blocked shots, 11 coming in the last four games.

• UCSD allowed 49.3 ppg in six Big West games, the lowest average in conference play and just ahead of UH.

• Freshman guard Sumayah Sugapong leads UCSD with 14.1 points per game. Graduate guard Denali Pinto is next with 11.3 ppg with a team-high 32 3-pointers. 

• UCSD center Katie Springs leads the Big West with 9.1 rebounds per game.
