FULLERTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i track and field team wrapped up the first day of the Big West Championships at the Titan Track Complex by scoring 37 points for third place heading into the second and final day on Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine collected two individual championships on the day, with the first coming in the opening event as junior Montserrat Montanes I Arbo claimed a win in the hammer throw. Montanes I Arbo destroyed the competition by nearly four meters (over 12ft) with a distance of 58.08m, placing her second all-time in the UH record.
The second went to sophomore
Lilian Turban in the high jump, continuing her stretch of six straight appearances in the high jump event with six wins. Turban swept through the outdoor season, winning the high jump in every one of her appearances dating back to Mar. 10 in the Ben Brown Invitational. On Friday, Turban cleared the bar at 1.85m (6'0 ¾), and the second-place jump came in at 1.71m while ranking as her personal best.
UH scored in the discus and the long jump, adding to their point total on the day. Graduate
Victoria Solheim placed at No. 6, tossing it 47.04m, tallying three points. At the same time, sophomore
Caitlin Simmons placed at No. 5 in the long jump with a distance of 5.85m (19'2 ½ ).
Junior
Alyssa Mae Antolin qualified in the top spot of the 200m, where she currently ranks first in the conference with a time of 23.69; she also placed at No. 6 in the 100m at 11.67. She'll compete in the finals of each event on Saturday.
UH has positioned itself to move up by beginning with field events at 8:30 a.m. HT on Saturday. Track events will start later at 10 a.m. HT.
