Mantellato Dias Earns Big West Honors For Second Straight Week

IRVINE, Calif. — University of Hawai'i freshman attacker Bia Mantellato Dias was named the Big West Water Polo Player of the Week for the second straight week after continuing her torrid scoring pace. It marks the third time overall this season she has earned the honor.

The fantastic freshman recorded eight goals, six steals, an assist, seven exclusions drawn and two penalties drawn in three matches as UH remained undefeated in Big West play (5-0). In UH's 12-10 win over UC San Diego, she tallied a season-high seven goals on just nine shots. The seven goals were the most by a Rainbow Wahine player in 10 years and tied for the third most ever by a Rainbow Wahine. Dias recorded four of those goals in the first quarter alone to help UH build a lead it would not relinquish.

Dias played limited minutes in UH's next match, but still  contributed an assist, a penalty drawn and two steals in UH's 20-3 win over Cal State Fullerton for the program's largest margin of victory ever in a conference match. She capped UH's three-match road swing by tallying a goal, a steal, five exclusions drawn, and one penalty drawn in a 13-8 loss at No. 3 UCLA in a non-conference match.

The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil currently leads the team and is among the national leaders in goals scored with 66 on the season.

Dias and the 'Bows will conclude the regular season at home with a pair of critical matches in their quest for a Big West title. First up will be a showdown against rival UC Irvine on Saturday, April 15. First sprint is 6:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
