Campbell-Pua Fires One-Hit Shutout Over Niagara

Box Score HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (14-7, 0-0 BW) overwhelmed Niagara, 9-0 in five innings to open the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Wahine Classic. UH starter Key-Anna Campbell-Pua fired a gem, tossing a one-hit shutout, while Maya Nakamura went 3-for-3 and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle on Thursday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Campbell-Pua improved to 5-2 on the season and faced the minimum 15 batters in the mercy-rule win. She did not allow a walk and struck out three Purple Eagles while getting support from her defense. Shayna Myshrall got Niagara's only hit, but after she rounded first, centerfielder Cira Bartolotti fired a strike to Mya'Liah Bethea at first who completed the pick off to erase the lone Purple Eagle to reach base.

Nakamura tied her career high racking up three hits while hitting a single, a triple and a home run. She drove in a career-high five RBI in the game. All three of her hits drove in at least one runs each.

In the first, Ka'ena Keliinoi drove a double to the right-centerfield gap and then scored on a single up the middle by Nakamura. Later, Izabella Martinez lifted her second career home run to centerfield to drive in Haley Johnson giving UH an early 3-0 lead after an inning of play.

After two web-gems and a strikeout by the UH defense in the top of the second, the offense kept firing. Cira Bartolotti blasted her first home run of the season. The solo shot to left-center was the second round-tripper of her career. Later with one out, Nakamura ripped a triple down the third base line to score Cierra Yamamoto and Xiao Gin for a 6-0 lead.

In the fourth, Keliinoi notched her second double of the game that drove in Yamamoto. Nakamura followed by launching a two run home run high over the centerfield fence. It was her second homer of the season and 12th of her career. After four complete innings, UH led 9-0.

The win was UH's sixth mercy-rule win of the season.

Niagara's Cara Leone suffered the loss, dropping her record to 0-3. She threw the first 1-1/3 innings allowing six runs on five hits with a walk. Maddi Hickingbottom threw the next 1-2/3 innings, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts and Julia Thompson threw the final inning, giving up three runs on three hits.

The OUTRIGGER Rainbow Wahine Classic continues on Friday with three games. UH will face Fordham at 6:00 p.m. HT at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
