Softball Hosts Outrigger Rainbow Wahine Classic

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i softball team (13-7, 0-0 Big West) hosts its fourth and final pre-season tournament, the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Wahine Classic from Thursday, March 9 - Sunday, March 12, 2023. Competing in the four-day tourney are Fordham, Iowa State, Niagara, and Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a 4-1 performance

Promotions OUTRIGGER Resorts and Hotels is the tournament sponsor of the Rainbow Wahine Classic and will provide Outrigger tote bags for the winners of the popular "Ballpark Bingo."  Also, Outrigger T-shirts will be thrown into the stands during the fourth inning of every UH game.
**UH Athletics, in partnership with the Hawaii Foodbank, will help to kick-off the Annual State Employees' Food Drive. Fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items or make monetary contributions at collection areas at Les Murakami Stadium.

Streak: In 2020, before the COVID-19 shut down, Iowa State opoened the season in Honolulu, copeting in the Paradise Classic. ISU defeated UH twice, 8-4 on Feb. 7 and 7-2 on Feb. 8.

NEWS & NOTES
  • With a 13-7 overall record, Hawai'i enters the week atop the Big West Standings with a .650 win percentage. Currently in second is UC Davis  who is 10-6 (.625)
  • Last week, UH went 4-1 in the Hawai'i Spring Fling Tournament, notching wins over St. Bonaventure, Santa Clara, Niagara, and Pacific before falling to Utah in the tourney finale. 
  • The loss to Utah snapped UH's season-long six game win streak
  • On offense, UH is out-hitting their opponents, .301-to-.233 and 44 of their 147 hits have gone for extra bases (23 doubles, three triples, and 18 home runs)
  • UH's .90 home runs per game leads the Big West and is ranked No. 52 in the NCAA. Hawai'i's offense leads the Big West in scoring (5.65 runs/game), slugging percentage (.470), and walks (78).
  • On defense, the 'Bows lead the Big West in double plays per game (.60) which ranks them No. 7 nationally and UH leads the BW in shutouts with five.
  • Individually, junior shortstop Xiao Gin and sophomore catcher Izabella Martinez are tied with a team-best .373 batting average. Gin, who has served as UH's leadoff hitter in all 20 games, leads UH with 22 hits, 19 runs scored and 17 walks, while Martinezleads UH with five doubles and is tied for second with 16 RBI.
  • Junior utility player Mya'Liah Bethea leads the Big West with seven home runs, a .35 home run/game average, and a .741 slugging percentage.
  • Gin also leas the BW averaging .95 runs per game.
  • Junior second baseman Maya Nakamura is tops in the BW with a .547 on-base percentage
  • Freshman pitcher Millie Fidge earned her first collegiate win over Niagara. She also went 2-for-2 at the plate and launched the walk off, solo home run that ended the game, 8-0 by mercy-rule. She is the first pitcher to hit a home run and earn the win in the same game since Stephanie Ricketts accomplished the feat in 2011.
  • Sophomore pitcher Brianna Lopez leads the Big West in shutouts  and is ranked No. 9 in the NCAA with three shutouts. This season, she leads UH with a 1.52 ERA and has a team-best 7-3 record in 10 starts. She has held opponents to a .225 batting average with 41 strikeouts to 18 walks in 60.0 innings pitched.
