HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i sovtball team (15-7, 0-0 Big West) held off Fordham 4-2 on Day 2 of the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Wahine Classic. UH's offense scored all four of their runs in the first two innings which was enough as Hawai'i starter
Brianna Lopez improved to 8-3 with a complete game victory on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Lopez retired the first 11 batters in a row before issuing a walk. She took a no-hit bid through 4-2/3 innings. Lopez finished the game allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and a season-high 10 strikeouts.
Hawai'i posted one run in the first. Xiao Gin led off the inning by looping an opposite field single to left. She moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by
Ka'ena Keliinoi, and then advanced to third on a groundout.
Haley Johnson then drove Gin across the plate with a single to right for an early 1-0 lead.
The 'Bows added three runs in the second.
Maycen Gibbs and
Cira Bartolotti both scored on a single to center. Later, Yamamoto tagged and scored on a foul fly-out to left hit by Gin that gave UH a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth, Fordham scored two runs on a double by Sydney Wells to cut their deficit in half as UH still led, 4-2.
But in the bottom of the seventh, Lopez settled back down to strikeout the side and end the game.
Fordham's starter Holly Beeman also threw a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
The OUTRIGGER Rainbow Wahine Classic continues on Saturday, March 11 as UH plays two games. The 'Bows will take on Iowa State at 3:00 p.m. and Fordham at 5:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
