Four Rainbow Wahine Earn All-Big West Honors

Four members of the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team earned postseason recognition as part of The Big West 2023 All-Conference team on Saturday with forward Amber Gilbert voted to the first team.

Rainbow Wahine midfielder Eliza Ammendolia and defender Jacey Jicha were voted to the All-Big West second team by the conference's coaches and midfielder Izzy Ayala earned a place on the All-Freshman Team.

Gilbert was named to the All-Freshman team last season and leads the Rainbow Wahine as a sophomore with seven goals in the regular season. Her total ranks third in the Big West with three coming in conference play. She posted a brace against UC San Diego and closed the regular season with a goal against Long Beach State. Her average of .467 goals per game is second in the conference. She's started each of her 30 career matches and enters the Big West Championship with the team's longest active starting streak. She is UH's 12th first-team honoree since the program joined the Big West in 2012.

Ammendolia earned All-Big West recognition for the fourth time in her career. She was a first-team pick in 2019 and '22, made the second team in 2021 and was also part of the All-Freshman team in 2019. She's the first UH player to earn all-conference honors four times since Natasha Kai made the All-Western Athletic Conference first team in 2002 to '05. This season, the senior from Australia scored a long-range goal against UC San Diego and has two assists.

Jicha, a junior from Mililani, made the All-Big West second team for the second straight year. She's started all 15 matches this season as the anchor of the Rainbow Wahine defense and ranks second among UH field players with 1,221 minutes. She's played all 90 minutes in 11 matches this season, including 10 of the last 11.

Ayala, from Henderson, Nev., quickly established herself in the midfield and has started all 15 matches of her freshman season, logging 1,160 minutes of playing time. She posted goals against CSUN and CSU Bakersfield.

The Rainbow Wahine open play in the Big West Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday at Cal Poly. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Pacific Time, 11 a.m. Hawai'i Time.
