GAME STORYLINES
- This week's game is UH's Homecoming game. Hawai'i is 41-29-1 all-time in Homecoming games which includes a current five-game win streak.
- San José State was UH's Homecoming opponent five previous times and the Warriors are 3-2 against them including wins in the last two match-ups in 2004 and 2017.
- The teams are playing for the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy, which was created in memory of the legendary head coach of both programs who passed away in May 2019. SJSU has held possession of the trophy since 2020.
- Tomey coached UH for 10 seasons from 1977-86, compiling a 63-46-3 record, and spent one season as special teams coordinator in 2011. He is a member of the school's Sports Circle of Honor. Tomey coached SJSU for five seasons which included a 9-win campaign in 2006.
- The Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy is one of four rivalry trophies that Hawai'i regularly plays for. UH does not currently own possession of any of the trophies.
- The all-time series is tied 22-22-1. The series began in 1936 and the teams have played every year since 1996 with the exception of 2012.
- The Spartans have won the last three games in the series, including a 27-14 victory last season in San José and consecutive games in Honolulu (2020 and '21).
- The road team has won seven of the last 10 meetings and 10 of the last 15.
- Hawai'i (2-6, 0-3 MW) suffered its third straight loss last week following a 42-21 setback to New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rainbow Warriors trailed 28-14 at the half and committed three second half turnovers.
- SJSU (3-5, 2-2) knocked off Utah State, 42-21 last week in San José for its first win over the Aggies since 2008. The Spartans won their second straight game after starting the season 1-5.
- SJSU quarterback Chevan Cordeiro started 23 career games for the Rainbow Warriors from 2018-21 and is the only quarterback in program history to pass for 6,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a career. In last year's match-up, Cordeiro threw for 208 yards and two TDs.
- QB Brayden Schager has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of his last 17 games, which is currently the fourth-longest streak nationally. He threw for 300+ yards for the third consecutive game last week against New Mexico and his five 300-yard games this season is second only to Washington's Michael Penix, Jr (6). His eight 50+ yard pass plays lead FBS and his eight fourth quarter TD passes rank second behind Colorado State's Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi (10).
