SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team continued to compete in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in San Diego, Calif.. Junior
Ana Vilcek is the lone Rainbow Wahine still alive in the Main Draw after sweeping her opponent to advance to the singles' Round of 16 on Saturday. The doubles competition opened on Friday with all three UH pairs advancing in the Round of 32. Matches were played at two different sites in San Diego, Calif. with the University of San Diego hosting at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center and San Diego State hosting at the Aztec Tennis Complex.
After dropping the first set in her Round of 32 match, Vilcek battled her way back and gave up just three games in the final two sets to defeat UCLA's Elise Wagle, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Vilcek will take on seventh-seeded Claudia De Las Heras of San Diego in Saturday's sweet 16 match.
Hawai'i's
Nelly Knezkova who also played in the singles Round of 32 on Friday fell to Pepperdine's sixth-seeded Nikki Redelijk, 6-3, 6-1.
In extra singles matches, UH's
Nikola Homolkova was the only Rainbow Wahine to win her match. She downed Arizona's Kayla Wilkins in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, all three Hawai'i duos won their Round of 64 matches.
Anna Kern and Lanz held off USC's McKenna Koenig and Isabella Lee by a break, 8-6. Homolkova and Knezkova combined forces to defeat UC San Diego's Cincy Chen and Polina Jorniak, 8-4 and
Sheena Masuda and Vilcek dominated UC Riverside's Maya Youssef and Kamya Nair, 8-2. Later on Friday morning, all three UH doubles teams fell in the Round of 32, but UH partners Masuda and Vilcek gave everything they had, but fell just short in a marathon tiebreaker that ended 9-7 to Arizona State's Katelyn Vu and Kelly Leung, 8-7 (7).
