Nepomuceno Advances in ITA Southwest Regional

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team kicked off action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southwest Regional on Thursday in San Diego, Calif. at the Hogan Tennis Center and the Aztec Tennis Center. The opening day was highlighted by a gritty performance from junior Makeilah Nepomuceno who survived back-to-back marathon matches to advance.

The day started with doubles. Freshmen Stefi Aludo and Tenielle Madis—fresh off competing for Team Philippines in the 2026 Asian Games—delivered a dominant performance, dismantling Long Beach State's duo of Thea Jagare and Pamela Badilo Hernandez, 8-2, to advance to the Round of 32.

San Diego's Emily Deming and Hannah Read topped UH's Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo, 8-5, while the Toreros' Charlotte Keitel and Lila Grace Bachour defeated UH's Grete Gull and Malgorzata Bajorek, 8-4.

Five Rainbow Wahine competed in the "Round of 64" qualifying singles matches, posting a strong 4-1 record in the opening round. Nepomuceno outlasted Long Beach State's Sonia Van San in two tight tiebreakers, winning 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-3). Senior Hannah Galindo cruised past Cal Poly's Aspen Chung in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Grete Gull also picked up a straight-set victory over UC Irvine's Mackenzie Lukin, 6-3, 6-2. UH freshman Malgorzata Bajorek took down CSUN's Madison Shepperson, 6-4, 6-4. Fellow freshman Stefi Aludo pushed Pamela Badilo Hernandez of Long Beach State to the absolute brink, taking the first set tiebreaker before ultimately falling in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-7 (8-10), 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).

Moving into the singles Round of 32 Qualifying, Nepomuceno stayed alive as she battled past LMU's Ada Piestrzynska in a hard-fought three-set thriller to secure her spot in the Round of 16 with a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) super tiebreaker victory.

In other Round of 32 action, Arizona's Stephanie Shogreen defeated UH's Galindo, 6-2, 6-2. The Wildcats' Zoya Chulak stopped Bajorek in two, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, while Sofia Cohen Perovani of LMU held off Gull (UH) in back-to-back close sets, 7-5, 7-5.

Action continues in San Diego with key upcoming matchups. In doubles (Round of 32), UH's Tenielle Madis and Stefi Aludo face off against Loyola Marymount's Ada Piestrzynska/Yelyzaveta Chainykova.

In singles (Round of 16): Nepomuceno takes on Arizona State's Nanami Goto, while Hawai'i's  Madis debuts in the Main Draw in singles action.

In consolation matches, UH players Aludo, Galindo, Bajorek, and Gull will look to bounce back in singles consolation play, while Nepomuceno/Galindo and Gull/Bajorek return for doubles consolation.
