Women's Tennis Fights Hard on Day 2 at ITA Southwest Regional

SAN DIEGO – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team continued play on Day 2 of the ITA Southwest Regional Championship. On Friday, as the singles competition entered the main draw phase with three Rainbow Wahine facing elite regional competition, the team fought through high-stakes matchups across both doubles and singles play.

In doubles action, the freshman tandem of Tennielle Madis and Stefi Aludo fought down to the wire in a thrilling contest against LMU's Ada Piestrzynska and Yelyzaveta Chairnykova. After trading blows back and forth, the two sides found themselves tied at 7-7 and headed into a tiebreaker. The UH duo ultimately came up just short in the tiebreaker, falling to the LMU pair, 8-7 (7-2).

Singles play saw Hawai'i square off against tough opponents in the Main Draw Round of 64. Sophomore Grete Gull put up a strong second-set fight before falling to Pepperdine's Chantal Sauvant, 6-0, 6-4. Meanwhile, UH's Madis pushed UC Santa Barbara's Ekua Youri to a decisive third set by taking the second, but Youri ultimately pulled away to secure a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory. Rounding out the UH trio in action, after a pair of marathon matches on Thursday, Makeilah Nepomuceno fell in straight sets to San Diego State's Tea Lukic, 6-4, 6-2.

The ITA Southwest Regional continues with consolation play on Saturday at either the Aztec Tennis Center or the Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
