NEWS & NOTES

  • The Rainbow Wahine are sitting in a tie for third place with UC San Diego at 5-3 while looking up at Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, and conference-leading UC Irvine.
  • After starting the conference slate at 2-0 by knocking off UC Davis and Cal Poly on the road, UH has gone 3-3 over their last six games, alternating wins and losses.
  • Since 2015-16, the 'Bows have only had two seasons of winning records on the road. The first was in 2015-16, when they won the conference tournament, and last season when they also won the conference tournament. UH is currently 4-3 on the road opposed to 3-7 at home.
  • UH pushed conference leader UCI to the limit last week with a double-digit fourth-quarter comeback to force the Anteaters into their second overtime game of the season. The 'Bows dropped the game 71-67, but it was only the second game for UCI in conference to play to be decided within four points or less.
  • Last season UH swept UC Santa Barbara in two games, including the final game of the regular season, to claim the Big West Championship. The 'Bows additionally swept the Roadrunners 3-0 and knocked them out of the conference tournament in a 48-47 nail-bitter during the quarter-finals.

DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE
One of the primary reasons the 'Bows have a winning record at 5-3 against Big West opponents is because of what they can do late in games. UH is outscoring opponents 137-105 in the fourth quarter alone, and the only opponent to outdo the 'Bows in the final frame was UC San Diego on January 5th, winning the quarter 19-14. In fact, UH has outplayed most opponents in the last 10 minutes with a 269-238 advantage across the entire schedule. Throughout 2022-23, the 'Bows are being outscored in each of the first three quarters by 12 or more points.

LILY WA-HEE-NAY-KA-POO
One would think that after winning the Big West Freshman of the Year Award a year ago while with Cal State Fullerton, most would know the name Lily Wahinekapu. In her sophomore campaign, she is No. 2 on the team in scoring at 10.6 points per game and No. 2 in minutes played at 29. 4 a game. Against conference opponents, she leads the team with 10.8 points per game, is No. 2 in rebounding at 4.9 boards per game, and is shooting 35% from three-point range. Learn the name, know the name, and say the name. Wahinekapu is emerging as one of the best in the Big West.

THE LAW OF TRANSFERS
In the day and age of the transfer portal, one crucial detail does get lost, career stats. Schools only calculate what you do while playing for them, so career milestones occasionally get forgotten when a student-athlete goes to a different school to play. So is the case for graduate center Kallin Spiller who has played for Seattle U, Columbia, and for the past two seasons here at UH. Spiller recently collected the 500th rebound of her career (SU- 208, CU- 37, UH-259), and she currently sits at 504, entering this week's games.  Even though her career stat won't count towards her numbers at UH, she still has an opportunity at the record book. Over her two seasons, she is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game and is tied for 10th all-time in rebounding average with Christen Roper (2000-2003) and Nani Flores (1994-1996).
