Water Polo Begins 2023 Season with the Rainbow Invitational on Saturday

***The University of Hawai'i has adopted a Clear Bag Policy in order to improve public safety within Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Attendees may bring in one (1) clear bag no larger than 12" x 6" x 12" and are limited to one clear bag per person

HONOLULU- Following their fifth overall regular season title and finishing runner-up at the Big West Championships, the University of Hawai'i water polo team opens its 2023 season with the Rainbow Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, Jan.14-15 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.


The Rainbow Wahine return 15 student-athletes from last year's squad, with an addition of six new newcomers, including freshmen and transfers. Among the returnees is senior attacker Alba Bonamusa Boix, who was third on the team in scoring with 36 goals and 10 assists. Partnering with Bonamusa Boix on the attack will be fellow junior Lucia Gomez De La Puente as she netted 21 goals and 15 assists during her sophomore campaign, including eight goals over her final seven matches of 2022.

Head Coach Maureen Cole enters her 12th season, joined by newly hired associate head coach James Robinson and graduate assistant Rebekka Williams.

UH last hosted the Rainbow Invitational with a sweep of wins during the 2020 season. The 'Bows will welcome #13 San Jose State, #20 Loyola Marymount, and #25 Marist this year, with play beginning on Saturday against the Spartans at 10:30 am H.T. Continuing later that afternoon with LMU at 6:00 pm H.T.,  followed by Sunday's match at 12:00 pm H.T with Marist.
