NEWS & NOTES

  • The Rainbow Wahine come into the week tied for No. 2 in the Big West standings at 3-1 after splitting their homestand with a loss to UC San Diego and a win over Cal State Fullerton.
  • Of the 'Bows' four losses in conference play dating back to last season, three of those four have come to UC San Diego, with the other coming against UC Santa Barbara on the road.
  • After starting the season with a 1-7 record, UH has won four of their last five games.
  • In 2022, UH went 3-0 against Long Beach State and CSUN, taking two from Matadors and one from the Beach.
  • The 'Bows have won four straight against the Beach, including a nine-point second-half comeback last season at Walter Pyramid.
  • UH holds a three-game win streak over CSUN dating back to 2020. They swept last season's series, winning by an average of 11 points. In 2021 CSUN did not compete, and the 'Bows knocked off the Matadors at home in 2020.

WINDEX, WE HAVE AN IDEA FOR NIL
Graduate center Kallin Spiller is up to her old ways and wiping the glass clean. From November 9th to the 26th, Spiller pulled down double-digit boards in five consecutive games, the longest stretch of her career. In two of her last four, she has pulled down 10 or more, including a career-high 13 against UC Davis. She ranks second in the Big West with eight rebounds a game, trailing Ila Lane of UC Santa Barbara with just nine boards per contest.

MODERN-DAY ANNIE OAKLEYS
The 'Bows 66-53 win over Cal State Fullerton on January 7th gave a glimpse into "what if" scenarios. Sophomore forward Meilani McBee went off for a career-high 22 points as she also hit a career-high six three-pointers in the game. UH is known for three-point shooting, case, and point Amy Atwell from the previous five seasons. By comparison of sharpshooters, Atwell finished with a program record 205 made threes, and McBee currently sits at 63 with this season and two more years of guaranteed eligibility. Throughout Atwell's career, she had 47 games of three or more made three-pointers, while McBee has six. But in Atwell's first three seasons, she recorded 17 of those 47. Of course, McBee has a long way to go, but she has shown the ability to be a consistent sniper.

HAWK AND ANIMAL
It's well documented; no matter the sport, Hawai'i teams are the most traveled in all college athletics in terms of miles. Road life is a part of the college experience, and it can be tough to win on the road. Before the 2021-22 season, women's basketball didn't have a winning record on the road since 2015-16, and last season they were one game above .500 at 6-5. So far this season, the road has provided UH with some positive outcomes, with a 3-2 record compared to 2-6 at home. The aforementioned 2015-16 season was the last time UH had a better record on the road than at home. Away from the islands, UH was 10-4, and at home, they were 9-5. WHAT A RUSH!!!
