Box Score HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (20-17, 14-8 Big West) shutout league-leader Cal State Fullerton (34-18, 18-4 BWC) in a pitchers' duel, 1-0 to open UH's final homestand of the season. Freshman pitcher
Brianna Lopez fired a complete-game shut out, while freshman battery-mate
Izabella Martinez drove in
Ka'ena Keliinoi in the sixth for what proved to be the winning run on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The win snapped UH's 16-game losing streak to Cal State Fullerton. UH last won a game against the Titans in 2015.
Lopez and CSF's starter Raci Miranda were locked in a pitchers' duel, with both blanking their opponents through the first five innings. Lopez allowed seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts to improve to 12-7 overall.
The Titans' Miranda suffered the loss, tossing the first five and a third innings. She allowed the one run on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Myka Sutherlin got the final two outs in the sixth.
CSF threatened to score in the fourth. Jessi Alcala led off the frame with a double smacked to left-centerfield. Later CSF put runners on first and second with an out after a walk to Hannah Becerra. But Lopez got a strike out followed by a ground out to short to stave off the Titans.
In the top of the sixth, the Titans put a pair of runners on again. With two outs, Becerra drew a walk and Alyssa Hernandez hit a double to put both runners into scoring position. But a groundout to Keliinoi at third thwarted the rally and ended the inning.
Hawai'i mounted their game-winning rally in the bottom of the sixth.
Nawai Kaupe led off with a single but was erased at second on a fielder's choice which left Keliinoi safe at first.
Maya Nakamura then drilled a double to the left-centerfield gap to put runners at second and third. With the infield drawn in, Martinez then came through in the clutch, chopping a single up the middle past the drawn in infield to drive in Keliinoi for the game's only run.
Hawai'i and Cal State Fullerton will square off in a series-ending doubleheader on Saturday, May 7, 2022. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. It will be Senior Day and UH's final home game of the season. UH will be honoring its five seniors—
Kaeli Bush,
Mikaela Gandia-Mak,
Nawai Kaupe,
Ashley Murphy, and
Brittnee Rossi.
