HEAD COACH RICH HILL
Overall record: 1,099-755-4 (35th season)
At Hawai'i: 20-19 (1st season)
SERIES VS UNLV
Overall record vs. UNLV: 17-14, UH
Streak: 3, UNLV
FIRST PITCH
- The Rainbow Warriors currently sit at No. 2 in the Big West Conference standings with a 13-8 record for a .619 winning percentage.
- The 13 wins against Big West opponents is the most for UH in one season since joining the conference in 2011.
- UH has not been swept by a conference opponent this season, No. 1 UC Santa Barbara and No. 4 UC Irvine are the only other teams to claim the same.
- UC Santa Barbara has only two conference losses entering May, one against No. 5 Cal State Fullerton and the other against No. 2 Hawai'i.
- Heading to Las Vegas, Nevada, UH is currently 9-7 in true road games. The 'Bows have not had a winning record on the road since 2011 when they went 9-8.
- UH and UNLV played one time earlier this season as a part of the Tony Gwynn Classic in San Diego, California. The Runnin' Rebels won the encounter 9-3, with senior pitcher Buddie Pindel taking the loss.
- Graduate centerfield Cole Cabrera sits at No. 10 in the Big West for RBIs with 30. He's also No. 9 in runs scored with 30.
- Cabrera is one of five players in the Big West to have over 80 chances and not record a single error with a 1.000 fielding percentage.
STANDING OUTSIDE THE FIRE
Junior pitcher Blaze Koali'i Pontes is letting it be known he is one of the premier pitchers in the Big West as he ranks in the top 10 of six crucial categories. Runs Allowed (2nd- 17), earned runs allowed (2nd-15), ERA (4th- 2.91), strikeouts (6th- 59), hits allowed (7th- 44), opposing batting average (9th- .246). All of this over 16 appearances, three starts, and 46.1 innings pitched.
DOING WHAT OTHERS HAVEN'T
The start of the season didn't go as planned for head coach Rich Hill and the Rainbow Warriors as they started 5-11 in non-conference action, followed by 3-6 to start the Big West schedule. But things have certainly taken a turn for the better as the 'Bows have won 10 of their last 12 conference games for a 13-8 record against the Big West, putting them at No. 2 in the standings. With six games on the conference schedule, UH has already won more games against conference foes in one season since joining in 2011.
WE CALL HIM "ROBO BYRD"
Senior outfielder Scotty Scott has been a mainstay in the 'Bows lineup for the past four years, playing in over 140 career games. In early April, Scott suffered a left forearm injury that sidelined him for a period of time and was thought to end his season along with his career at UH. To the surprise of many, Scott returned to the lineup against Fresno State on April 19th, supporting a lofty arm brace on his left wing, stating, "I took batting practice, and we all agreed my swing looked better. So let's give it a shot". With his return, the team has dubbed him the nickname "Robo Byrd" due to the arm brace and his middle name being Byrd.
FASHION TIPS OF A ROCK STAR
The frontman of a rock band is usually easy to spot as their style sticks out from the rest of their band mates. It's unknown to the masses what sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao can do as a singer, but in terms of his style, he's easy to spot on game days. Miyao has embraced the look of what many call "baseball shorts." His combo of short pants, tights, and long socks gives him a unique look that isn't very common in baseball. Some criticize the look, but it works for him as his play on the field has been consistently stellar. Miyao has boosted a .983 fielding percentage, committing just three errors in 172 chances while driving in 27 runs for second on the team.
