DAVIS, Calif.—After having their eight-game win streak end earlier this week, the University of Hawai'i baseball team returned to their winning ways by knocking off UC Davis 3-0 Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors (17-17, 10-6) have won eight in a row against Big West opponents, dating back to April 3rd against UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies (3-21, 2-13) have dropped four in a row and six of their last seven.
Junior starting pitcher
Cade Halemanu dominated through six innings for the second consecutive game. He kept the Aggies scoreless in this outing while recording his first double-digit strikeout game of the season with 10. It marked only the second in his career Halemanu sent down 10 batters via the punchout, the other coming a season ago against Cal State Fullerton on May 1st.
Offensively the 'Bows supported Halemanu and the pitching staff with three runs, making the most out of their opportunities. The first coming in the opening inning as UCD hit graduate center fielder
Cole Cabrera and junior third baseman
Aaron Ujimori in back-to-back at-bats. Sophomore catcher
Dallas Duarte sent a sacrifice bunt down the third-base line advancing both runners into scoring position. Cabrera later scored to make it 1-0 after a passed ball during junior
Jacob Igawa's at-bat.
UH added to its narrow lead with a run in the fourth as sophomore
Kyson Donahue recorded the third single of the inning, as his base knock scored Igawa from second. The third and final run of the day came in the sixth after Duarte was plunked, and Igawa sent a double to the right center field wall, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Sophomore
Stone Miyao collected his 20th run batted in on the year on a sacrifice fly, scoring Duarte.
Junior pitcher
Dalton Renne secured his team-high third save of the season after relieving Halemanu in the sixth. Renne threw three scoreless innings, nailing down the third shutout of the season for the Aggies' offense and the first shutout of the year for the 'Bows' pitching staff.
UH, and UCD will battle on Saturday in the second game of the series as
Blaze Koali'i Pontes takes the mound for the 'Bows in his second consecutive start. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. HT.
