Baseball Drops Game Two 3-2 at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team lost to UC Davis 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (17-18, 10-7) had their eight-game conference win streak end as the Aggies (4-21, 3-14) snap a four-game skid.

It was a defensive battle of a game that began with six scoreless innings from both sides of the ball. Blaze Koali'i Pontes was dominant on the mound, where he had a stretch of seven straight strikeouts, including eight consecutive batters retired. Davis threw six no-hit innings against the 'Bows.

Junior first baseman Jacob Igawa got the 'Bows first hit of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Igawa then took advantage of a passed ball on the next at-bat and moved to second. A fly ball from sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao was deep enough to force him to third base, and junior right fielder Matt Wong poked a ball deep enough for Igawa to tag and score the first run of the ball game.

The 'Bows struck again in the top of the eighth as junior left fielder Scotty Scott led off with a single. A perfectly executed hit and run with graduate center field Cole Cabrera put runners on the corners with one out. Junior third baseman Aaron Ujimori got the signal and dropped a safety squeeze, and Scott scored from third for a 2-0 lead in the eighth.

The Aggies managed two runners on first and second at the bottom of the eight. Jake Brandel hit one in the gap scoring both baserunners with two outs, and tied the game at 2-2.

Hawai'i, unable to get the offense going in the top of the ninth, opened the door for Davis, who managed to get runners on the corners with one out. Nick Leehey stepped into the box and drove the ball back up the middle to walk off the game and beat UH 3-2.

Pontes closed out the longest outing for a pitcher this season, where he had a season-high 12 strikeouts, no walks, and no runs allowed.

Igawa led the day for the 'Bows with two hits, including a double, while Ujimori and Wong picked up one RBI each.

The Rainbow Warriors return tomorrow for a rubber match at 10:00 am HT.
