IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team placed three golfers on the Big West all-conference teams, including just its second first-team honoree with the announcement of the league's postseason awards.
Freshman
Momo Sugiyama became just the second Rainbow Wahine to earn first-team honors, joining Izzy Leung in 2017.
Hyeonji Kang and
Hana Mirnik were both named to the second team.
The three honorees are the most in a single-season in program history.
Cal Poly's Kaylyn Noh won both the Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards while Cal Poly's Sophie Aagaard won Coach of the Year honors.
UH and Cal Poly shared the Big West championship after both teams finished with a 54-hole score of 903 at last week's conference tournament in San Luis Obispo, Calif. However, the Mustangs earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship with in the playoff.
Sugiyama led the Rainbow Wahine with a school-record 73.8 scoring average, the lowest since Leung averaged 74.4 during the 2016-17 season. The Gold Coast, Australia native posted eight Top 10 finishes in 11 tournaments played, including a win at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate and runner-up finishes at the HPU Sharks Shootout and Fresno State Classic. Her 13 rounds of par or better in 2021-22 was a new program single-season record along with her 77 birdies on the year. In addition, her 54-hole total of 211 at the Fresno State Classic was also a new school record.
Mirnik averaged 75.1 strokes per round with eight rounds of par or better while Kang posted a 75.4 average with six rounds of par or better. Kang, a freshman from Jeju, South Korea was named to last week's all-tournament team after placing fourth with a 222 total. Mirnik, a junior from Celje, Slovenia, played in all 11 tournaments and opened the season by earning medalist honors at the HPU Sharks Shootout. Her 75.5 career average is second all-time in school history.
