SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team maintained its lead in the team standings after the second round of the Big West Championship Monday at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine carded a 298 for a 595 total to extend its lead over host Cal Poly to five strokes. The Mustangs shot 302 and are in second placed at 600 followed by Long Beach State (603), UC Riverside (606), Cal State Fullerton (618), CSUN (632), UC Davis (633), UC Irvine (636), and Cal State Bakersfield (671).
UH is seeking its first Big West title.
In the individual standings, freshman
Momo Sugiyama shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for fourth at 3-over 147. The Gold Coast, Australia native posted back-to-back birdies to finish her round.
First round leader
Monica Johnson struggled with a second round 80 and is tied for seventh at 6-over 150. Freshman
Hyeonji Kang carded a 73 and is 5-over 149 and in sixth place.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine are
Hana Mirnik (153; t-13
th) and
Mayumi Umezu (153; t-13
th).
UC Riverside's Kate Villegas holds the individual lead at 1-under 143 after a second round 69. Cal Poly's Caroline Cantlay and Kaylyn Noh are tied for second at 1-over 145.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday. UH will be grouped with Cal Poly and Long Beach State with tee times beginning at 9:10 a.m. PT.
