'EWA BEACH, O'AHU – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team posted its best finish at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational since winning the title in 1986 placing runner-up after Tuesday's final round at the Hoakalei Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine carded a final round 300 for a 890 total, five strokes behind champion Sacramento State, who won its first Thompson Invitational. UH entered the day with a one-stroke lead and was seeking its second tournament title.
UH freshman
Momo Sugiyama finished in a tie for third place, two strokes behind medalist Jocelyn Chee Yi Min of Cal Baptist (+1, 217). Min held off Sacramento State's Tess Blair to become the Hornets' first medalist at the Thompson Invite. Sugiyama posted her fifth Top 5 finish of the season with a final round 74 for a 3-over 219 total.
Cal Baptist (891) placed third followed by ULM (902) and Grand Canyon (904). UC Riverside (913), Long Beach State (917), Nevada (917), Wyoming (922), and Gonzaga (942) rounded out the field.
UH freshman
Monica Johnson, competing as an individual, posted an even par 72 on Tuesday to place fifth overall at 4-over 220, her best 54-hole score as a Rainbow Wahine and fourth career Top 10 finish.
Hyeonji Kang, who entered the day one stroke off the lead, tied for sixth overall at 5-over 221 after a final round 76.
Hana Mirnik carded her third straight 75 for a 225 total and tie for 13th.
Ting-Yu Liu (228) and
Mayumi Umezu (231) finished in a tie for 22
nd and 31
st, respectively.
Also competing as an individual for the Rainbow Wahine is junior
Kralyn Salazar (247, t-54
th).
The second place finish was UH's third Top 5 in three spring tournaments this season and second Top 3 in as many weeks. The Rainbow Wahine will next compete in the Fresno State Classic, March 21-22 in Fresno, Calif.
