Stanford Shuts Out Women's Tennis

Box Score STANFORD, Calif.--THE 75th-ranked University of Hawai'i women's tennis team was shut-out by 17th-ranked Stanford, 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The loss snapped Hawai'i's seven-match win streak as UH starts a power-packed four-match roadtrip in California.

The Cardinal captured the doubles point to start the match. Stanford's No. 2 duo of Valencia Xu and Alexandra Yepifanova defeated Gitte Heynemans and Nidhi Surapaneni, 6-3. Stanford's No. 1 team of 7th-ranked Angelica Blake and Connie Ma then knocked off UH's Ana Vilcek and Tal Talya Zandberg, 6-2 for the 1-0 lead. UH's No. 3, Madison Kim and Satsuki Takamura were leading Stanford's Sara Choy and Nikula Madurawe 4-3 when the match went unfinished.

Stanford's No. 6, Choy nearly shutout UH's Surapaneni to start the singles matches, 6-1, 6-0. The Cardinal's 18th-ranked Yepifanova held off UH's Vilcek by a break in the first set, then pulled away for the two-set victory, 6-4, 6-0. 13th-ranked Ma then cruised past UH's Takamura on the No. 1 court for a 6-2, 6-0 win that clinched the match. Hawai'i's Madison Kim was the lone Rainbow Wahine to force a third set super-tiebreaker against India Houghton. Kim won the first set 6-0, but fell in the second set, 3-6 and eventually, with the match already decided, falling 10-5 in the third set super-tiebreaker.

Hawai'i will continue their roadtrip heading down the Cali coast to 29th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Friday, April 1 at 9:00 a.m. Ht.
