HONOLULU – Hawai'i bid aloha to legendary University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan Sunday morning in a beachside memorial service held steps from world famous Duke's Waikīkī.
The "Celebration of Life' was attended by many of Brennan's former teammates, coaches, and friends along with the Brennan family, which included cousin Brent Brennan, head coach of San Jose State. UH head coach
Timmy Chang and many of the current Rainbow Warriors football team and staff also attended.
The ceremony included speeches by Brennan's former coach June Jones and Chang. Entertainer Kimo Kahoano served as master of ceremony and Kahu Kordell Kekoa officiated. Following the ceremony, many in attendance participated in a traditional Hawaiian paddle-out in which Brennan's ashes were scattered in the ocean.
Brennan passed away last May at the age of 37. The native of Irvine, Calif., set multiple school and NCAA records during a decorated career that also saw him become a Heisman Trophy finalist. His decision to forgo the NFL Draft and return for his senior season was a pivotal moment in the program's history and helped lead to an unforgettable 12-0 regular-season in 2007.
Brennan was posthumously inducted into the UH Sports Circle of Honor last fall and had his No. 15 jersey retired.
