Bats Caught Fire as Baseball Beats Rutgers 13-7 to Split First Ever Series

HONOLULU- The University of Hawai'I picked up a 13-7 win to split their first-ever series with Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (6-10) stroked the ball from beginning till end. Rutgers (12-3) failed to take a series outright for the first time this season.

Rutgers scored in the first inning for the third straight game taking a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore third baseman Aaron Ujimori led the game off with a walk to jumpstart the offense. Junior left fielder Scotty Scott followed up with a hit to put the first runner in scoring position. Two batters later, junior first baseman Jacob Igawa drove in the first Hawai'i run.

In the second, graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera drew another leadoff walk, stole second, and moved over on a ground ball to third base. With Ujimori at the plate, he lined one to the outfield for an RBI single as UH regained a 2-1 advantage.

The Scarlett Knights answered back with a run and tied things up in the second.

Another leadoff walk started off the third inning, and some small ball from sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao pushed across another run on a sacrifice bunt. Cabrera followed up with single driving in another run and extending the lead to 4-2.

The bats got hot in the fifth and sixth innings for the Warriors as they scored eight runs across the two innings. Junior right fielder Matt Wong and freshman shortstop Jordan Donahue combined for five of the eight RBIs in those two frames.

Hawai'i added one last insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after Ujimori dropped a sac bunt scoring Cabrera from third, putting the game out of reach.

Wong and Donahue each had a trio of hits in today's contest. At the same time, Wong and sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao helped bring three RBIs each across home plate.

After giving up two earned runs early on, junior pitcher Dalton Renne settled in and went four and one-third of an inning to pick up his second win of the season.

UH heads on the road for a three-game conference-opening series against Long Beach State, beginning Friday, Mar. 18, 3:00 pm HT.
