FIRST PITCH
  • The Rainbow Warriors last hosted a top-25 opponent in 2017 with conference rival Cal State Fullerton when the Titans were ranked #14. The last non-conference team to play in front of a Hawai'i home crowd came in 2015 against Oregon, and the Ducks were slotted at #15.
  • Entering Friday, UH is 4-4 mirroring themselves in back-to-back weeks, losing on Friday and Saturday but winning on Sunday and Monday.
  • UH is coming off the longest played game in program history. On Monday, February 28, UH and San Diego State battled for six hours and 14 minutes in a 15 inning marathon.
  • Nine pitchers were used by UH in the extra-inning extravaganza, also a program record.
  • Redshirt-sophomore Trevor Ichimura was the rubber arm in the 8-5 extra-inning win, throwing five and two-thirds innings, recording the longest outing of his career.
  • UH collected 11 hits over the 15 innings, with graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera leading the team with a 3-for-7 night at the plate. Junior infielder Matt Aribal did his part by scoring three runs for the 'Bows while collecting a hit and getting hit by a pitch twice.
  • The first two spots of the rotation have been solidified by junior Cade Halemanu and graduate Andy Archer. The one-two combo is still trying to gain traction as they're combined 0-1 in four starts with 17 and two-third innings pitched as each of their ERAs are over 5.00.
  • Senior left fielder Scotty Scott continues to be an on-base machine to start the season. He has reached base in all eight games this season by either a hit, walk, or hit by a pitch for a .526 OBP%. Scott also has a nine-game hit streak and a 10-game on-base streak dating back to last season.

THEM VANDY BOYS
UH, and Vanderbilt has an interesting history with the 'Bows holding a 19-4 advantage all-time against the SEC powerhouse and national champion contending program. The series began in 1973, and the two teams played consistently from 1977 to 1981 before the series was halted until UH visited Nashville, Tennessee, in 2020. The 'Bows are 19-4 all-time against Vandy but are 1-2 in the most recent encounter two years ago. On the island of O'ahu, the 'Bows hold an 18-1 record against them, including a 12 game win streak from March 3, 1977, to March 2, 1981.

(OUT OF SIGHT) OUT OF MIND, OUT OF TOUCH, OUT OF TIME

The Warriors bullpen proves to be a strong point of the 2022 roster. After eight games, the pen has recorded all four wins while tallying a 2.94 ERA. Redshirt sophomore Trevor Ichimura, junior Dalton Renne, and freshman Cory Ronnan have accumulated over three innings of work, and all three have recorded 0.00 ERAs. Sophomore Tai Atkins leads the way in appearances with five, tallying an ERA of 2.70 with 12 strikeouts.

SEND 'EM HOME
As a team, UH is still trying to find their way offensively with a .219 team batting average, but in terms of getting on base, their team OBP stands at .353. Scott leads the team with a .571 average with runners on base, while junior right fielder Matt is second with at .286. As a unit, UH has drawn 37 walks (4.6 per game) and 22 batters hit by a pitch (2.75 per game). In short, scoring opportunities are there, but with runners are on, UH is hitting .218 and .205 when runners are in scoring position.

FINDING HIS GEORGIA LINE
Graduate pitcher Andy Archer has shown flashes of brilliance in his first two starts while featuring a few struggles. The 6'5 right-hander from Peachtree Corners, Georgia, only allows a .200 average against him, including a .167 average when facing left-handers. The problem so far has been his walks, as he has allowed six over eight and two-thirds innings of work. Batters are swatting a .300 average against Archer when runners are on base, compared to .167 when the bases are empty.

GIMME SOME MORE
In eight games, two players have consistently stayed in the lineup at their position: Graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera and sophomore third baseman Aaron Ujimori. Cabrera is off to a solid start as he leads the team in slugging percentage at .419 and is second in batting average at .323. Ujimori is still trying to even out at the plate, hitting .161 but leads the team in runs batted in with six.

TWO DONAHUES, ONE TEAM
When looking at the 2022 roster, your mind will wander about Kyson and Jordan Donahue. The infield duo are cousins, and both have multiple years of eligibility remaining. Their grandpas were brothers, and their dads are first cousins. Even though they both went to different high schools, Kyson went to Punahou, and Jordan went to Damien. They're close and decided to transfer to Hawai'i to play together. Jordan redshirted at Oregon State, while Kyson played two years at Arizona, seeing action in 20 games. Jordan has played in eight games this season, with seven at shortstop and another at second base. While Kyson is battling back from injury, playing in two games and starting one at shortstop. In the one game Kyson started, Jordan played beside him at second base.
