NEWS & NOTES

  • The 'Bows are in the best position they've been in since the 2014-15 season. In terms of the conference standings, they lead the way with a 9-3 record and a .750 winning percentage. The 2014-15 campaign marked the last time UH won the regular-season conference title with a 14-2 record. It was also the only regular-season championship under head coach Laura Beeman.
  • Graduate Amy Atwell is making a case for Big West Conference Player of the Year. She currently leads the conference in scoring with 18.1 points per game while sitting in second of the conference in field goal percentage (.496) free throw percentage (.842). She is also seventh in the conference in rebounding, averaging 6.6 a game.
  • Even though the 'Bows dropped a recent home game to UC San Diego, SimpliFi Arena has treated them well, accumulating a 9-4 record, 4-1 in conference games.
  • Away from the island of O'ahu, the 'Bows are 4-5 overall but have won three straight on the road.
  • Earlier this season, UH was scheduled to play Cal Poly at home, but the game was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. On January 20th and 22nd, the 'Bows hosted CSU Bakersfield, winning both, but only the second game counted towards the conference standings.
  • In Bakersfield last season, UH dropped both games to the Roadrunners but later beat them at the Big West Conference tournament. The 'Bows and Mustangs split last year's games in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with Cal Poly winning in overtime 79-71, followed by UH winning 66-60 the following day.
COULD THEY MAKE HISTORY?
Historically, the Rainbow Wahine find themselves in an exciting position with four games to go on the schedule, and UH is atop the Big West Conference standings. Three of the four teams on the schedule have records below .500, and the other is Santa Barbara, to who UH fell to earlier in the season. The 'Bows have won four regular-season conference championships, three in the Big West Conference (1992-93', 93-94', 2014-15') and one in the WAC (1997-98). The program has two tournament championships (1996 & 2016) in the Big West. Could the 2021-2022 campaign be the first year the 'Bows win both in the same season?

HIGH ABOVE THE MUCKY-MUCK
UC Davis has been the team to beat in the Big West Conference as they've won six consecutive regular-season championships. But the 2021-22 campaign is wide open, and the 'Bows are currently at the top of the rankings. The last team to win a Big West regular-season championship not named UC Davis was UH during the 2014-2015 season. The year marked the third season under head coach Laura Beeman, and assistant coach Alex Delanian was also a part of her staff in his first season when the 'Bows went 14-2 against conference foes.

CLIMBING THE RANKINGS
Since joining the 1,000 point club on Jan. 22, Atwell has been working her way up the all-time scoring chart at UH, currently sitting at 1,135 for No. 15 on the list. To make the top-10, she'll have to reach 1,200 points. Next up is Ashleigh Karaitiana at 1,167.

THERE'S ONLY ONE QUEEN
On Feb. 5, in front of her home crowd at SimpliFi Arena, Atwell drained a step-back three in the fourth quarter of a 76-57 win against UC Riverside, making her the all-time three-point queen in Rainbow Wahine basketball history. Atwell keeps adding to her all-time mark at 179 and counting.

LOVE THY THREE-BALL
Atwell has attempted 476 three-pointers going into the weekend, putting her at No. 2 all-time. Atwell is currently on pace to eclipse 500 attempts for her career. The only other player to attempt 500 or more threes at UH is Megan Tinnin with 526. Even more astonishing is her career shooting percentage currently sits at .376, now No. 2 in the UH record book. If her trajectory stays as is, Atwell will be the only student-athlete to finish in the top 3 of career makes, attempts, and three-point shooting percentage at UH.

SHE'S DOING WHAT NOW?!?!
Atwell is putting herself in rarefied air as one of the elite players to ever play for the Rainbow Wahine. Atwell will be the first 'Bow to average better than 17 points per game in a single season in over 20 years with her current pace. After 22 games, Atwell is averaging 18.1 points per game. Only two players have averaged 18 points or better as a senior in the women's basketball program history. Judy Mosley averaged 25.7 points per game in 1989-90, and Nani Cockett averaged 19.4 in 1997-1998.

DON'T FORGET THE OTHERS
While Atwell's production is leading the way, she's not the only Rainbow Wahine to be a scoring threat. Freshman guard Daejah Phillips (9.6 ppg), redshirt-freshman Olivia Davies (8.3 ppg), and graduate center Kallin Spiller (7.2 ppg) have all stepped up recently. Spiller dropped 15 points against UC Irvine, Phillips had a career-high 24 against UC San Diego, and Davies recently went through a stretch where she scored 17 points in three out of four games.
