‘Bows Battle in the MPSF Championships, Placing Second and Third Overall

MONTEREY PARK, CALIF.-  The University of Hawai'i swim and dive team concluded their final day at the MPSF championships, with the Rainbow Wahine claiming second place with a total of 700 points, and the Warriors finishing at third with 576.50 points.

As a result, the Wahine had their five year streak of conference championships come to an end, while the Warriors battled but haven't won an MPSF title since 2020.

The UH dive team triumphed the previous day, with Warrior senior Max Burman and Timothy Newton winning the 3 meter and platform event. Senior Daphne Wils took first-place in the 1 meter on Friday, and on Saturday sophomore Elma Lund took home the championship in the platform dive. The UH divers placed the 'Bows into an overall higher standing in the competition,as the swim team wrapped up their final day of events.

Saturday's swimming portion was overall very successful for the Rainbow Wahine, as junior Anna Friedrich and freshman Dorrotya Dobos placed second and third in the 200 backstroke event. The 200 backstroke event saw freshman Hannah Bailey snagging the second-place spot at 2:15.53. Graduate student Anna Kotonen took third for the 100 freestyle, timing at 50.24. Kotonen and Friedrich finished strong in the 400 freestyle relay, placing second at 3:20.88 alongside teammates Gabby Williams and Helena Djunic. UC San Diego took first at 3:19.13.

It was a close 200 backstroke event for the Rainbow Warriors, as junior Timothy Gallagher touched the wall at 1:43.97,  just a few tenths behind the first place slot. UC Santa Barbara's Kyle Brill took the win at 1:43.66. Freshman Tomer Goldfaden contributed to the scoreboard with a second-place win for the 200 breaststroke event, with a time of 1:58.06.

The 'Bows will return for the NCAA Zone E meet for the dive team in early March, with the swim NCAA championships close to follow.
