News & Notes
  • UH head coach Bob Coolen recorded his 1,100th career win this past Sunday with a 7-5 win over CSU Bakersfield. His career record included the five years he spent as head coach at Bentley prior taking the reins of the Hawai'i program in 1992. Coolen now has a 1,100-745-1 career record and a 1,028-652-1 record at UH. This is his 33rd season at UH--he served two seasons (1990-91) as an assistant to then head coach Rayla Allison. There are only four coaches in UH history who have recorded over 1,000 wins—Jim Scwitters (m/w tennis), Dave Shoji (women's volleyball), Les Murakami (baseball) and Coolen. Coolen is also the second longest tenured coach at Hawai'i, only sailing's Andy Johnson has served longer at 32 years.
  • The Rainbow Wahine's efforts this past week in Las Vegas, doesn't reflect in their win-loss record. The offense really got rolling on Day 2 out-hitting their opponents 35-24 in the last three games--including 15 hits against host UNLV and 14 in the tourney finale against Cal State Bakersfield.
  • Leading UH on offense was sophomore utility player Maya Nakamura who finished the week with a team-high .444 batting average (8-18) with a double, four RBI and four runs scored. Against CSUB, Nakamura went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
  • Senior shortstop Nawai Kaupe provided the power at the plate, launching a pair of home runs while driving in a team-high six runs. She also crossed the plate four times and hit .389 with a team-high .722 slugging percentage.Kaupe also went 2-for-3 in stolen bases to lead the 'Bows on the bases.
  • In the pitching circle, both of UH's freshman starters made their collegiate debuts. Lefty Brianna Lopez went 1-1, earning her first win in the Green and White against CSUB on Sunday. She tossed 15.0 innings and had a 4.67 ERA. Righty Chloe Borges led off the tourney with a stong performance against BYU in which she fired six solid innings giving up two runs on four hits with five walks and a strikeout. She did not figure in the decision against the Cougars. She then followed with an eight-inning complete game effort in a 12-11 slugfest loss to UNLV. She ended the week with an 0-2 record in two one-run losses with a 6.56 ERA in 16.0 innings of work,
