NEWS & NOTES
- After starting the season 0-4 on the road, the Rainbow Wahine have strung together a stretch of 4-1 away from the island O'ahu, including wins at No. 2 Long Beach State and No. 3 UC Irvine.
- The most recent stretch has the 'Bows on a five-game win streak, dating back to Jan. 29. Before their loss on Jan. 27 at UC Santa Barbara, UH had a winning streak of three.
- The top contributor over the recent stretch and for the season is graduate forward Amy Atwell. She leads the conference in scoring at 18.5 points per game, 19.1 against conference opponents, and has scored double-digits in every game over the current win streak.
- Behind the contributions of Atwell, the UH offense is clicking as the top-scoring team in the conference at 64.9 points per game against Big West opponents.
- UH previously faced UCSD and UC Irvine earlier this season on the road. In San Diego, the 'Bows fell 82-58 when Sydney Brown went off for 25 points and 16 rebounds. But two days later, UH picked up their first road of the season by taking down the Anteaters 77-72, with Atwell leading the way with 20 points.
- For UH, defense has helped the offense in 2022. When the 'Bows play locked down defense and hold opponents to 60 points or less, they're 6-0. In the same thought, UH is 11-0 when they shot better than their opponents, and are 8-1 when scoring 70 or more points in a game.
HIGH ABOVE THE MUCKY-MUCK
It's well documented UC Davis is the team to beat in the Big West Conference as they've won six consecutive regular-season championships. But the 2021-22 campaign is wide open, and the 'Bows are currently at the top of the rankings with six games to play. The last team to win a Big West regular-season championship not named UC Davis was UH during the 2014-2015 season. The year marked the third season under head coach
Laura Beeman, and assistant coach
Alex Delanian was also a part of her staff in his first season when the 'Bows went 14-2 against conference foes.
A SEASON OF HISTORY
Amy Atwell's legacy is cemented as one of the best in recent memory for her accomplishments in the 2021-2022 season. She became the 23rd member of the 1,000 point club at UH, broke the all-time three-point record, and was recently awarded with her fourth Big West Conference Player of the Week honor. She is the first Rainbow Wahine in program history to be bestowed with a weekly conference four times in one season. She currently leads the conference in scoring at 18.5 points per game and is now in the top 10 for rebounding, field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, and free throw percentage. Conference player of the year, anyone?
CLIMBING THE RANKINGS
Since joining the 1,000 point club on Jan. 22, Atwell has been working her way up the all-time scoring chart at UH, currently sitting at 1,106 for No. 16 on the list. To crack the top-15, she'll have to surpass Ayesha Brooks at 1,131. To make the top-10, she'll have to reach 1,200 points.
THERE'S ONLY ONE QUEEN
On Feb. 5, in front of her home crowd at SimpliFi Arena, Atwell drained a step-back three in the fourth quarter of a 76-57 win against UC Riverside, making her the all-time three-point queen in Rainbow Wahine basketball history. Atwell keeps adding to her all-time mark at 174 and counting.
LOVE THY THREE-BALL
Atwell has attempted 465 three-pointers going into the weekend, putting her at No. 2 all-time. Atwell is currently on pace to eclipse 500 attempts for her career. The only other player to attempt 500 or more threes at UH is Megan Tinnin with 526. Even more astonishing is her career shooting percentage currently sits at .374, now No. 2 in the UH record book. If her trajectory stays as is, Atwell will be the only student-athlete to finish in the top 3 of career makes attempts and three-point shooting percentage at UH.
SHE'S DOING WHAT NOW?!?!
Atwell is putting herself in rarefied air as one of the elite players to ever play for the Rainbow Wahine. With her current pace, Atwell will be the first 'Bow to average better than 17 points per game in a single season in over 20 years. After 20 games, Atwell is averaging 18.5 points per game. Only two players have averaged 18.3 points or better as a senior in the women's basketball program history. Judy Mosley averaged 25.7 points per game in 1989-90, and Nani Cockett averaged 19.4 in 1997-1998.
LIV YOUR LIFE
The 'Bows has a one-two punch alongside Atwell in freshman guard
Olivia Davies. Over her previous four games, Davies has scored double-digits for the best stretch of her young career. Ironically in three of those four games, she has scored exactly 17 points, matching her career-high.
